In short

the best SEO training courses in 2027 start free: read Google's own SEO Starter Guide, then take the free Ahrefs Academy beginner course and the free Semrush Academy courses, which now include AI search. If you want a university certificate, the UC Davis SEO Specialization on Coursera is the most structured option. If you need to understand how brands get cited in AI answers, add HubSpot Academy's AEO Fundamentals or the free Sorank GEO course. In French, Formaseo (the Abondance network) is the reference paid catalogue. The deciding criterion is how recently the course was updated, because a 2023 SEO course says nothing about AI Overviews or ChatGPT.

Transparency: the Sorank GEO course in this list is ours, built by me, the founder of Sorank. I ranked it ninth because it covers one specific subject (visibility in AI answers) and does not replace a complete SEO foundation. Every course below was checked on the provider's own pages in October 2026: existence, duration, price and certificate. When a provider does not publish an item, the article says so.

Choosing among the best SEO training courses got harder in 2026 for one reason: search changed faster than most course catalogues. Google now answers part of the queries with AI features built on its normal index, as its own documentation on AI features explains, and assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini recommend brands directly. A good course in 2026 teaches the classic foundations (crawling, indexing, keywords, content, links) and how those foundations carry into AI answers. I ran an SEO agency for two years before selling it to build Sorank, and I still see the same gap in new hires: they know the vocabulary and have never published a page that ranks.

How I ranked these SEO training courses

I scored each course on five criteria that decide whether training turns into results: the level it targets (beginner, intermediate, practitioner), the real duration, the public price, the certificate and who issues it, and whether the content covers AI search in 2026. A sixth criterion broke ties: the share of practice. A course that makes you work on a real site beats a longer course of slides.

I kept only courses I could verify on the provider's own site in October 2026. Several well-known programmes are absent for that reason alone: when I could not confirm the current price or content from the official page, I left the course out instead of repeating an old figure from a third-party list. HubSpot is a good example of why this matters: its long-running free SEO certification has been retired and replaced by courses on answer engine optimization, which many 2025 roundups still list as current.

The 9 best SEO training courses in 2027

1. Google SEO Starter Guide: the official foundation

What it is. The SEO Starter Guide is Google's own introduction to search engine optimization, last updated on 10 December 2025. It covers how Google finds pages, site and URL structure, duplicate content, titles, snippets, images, video and the myths Google says you can ignore.

Who it is for. Anyone starting out, and anyone who wants to check what a paid course teaches against the primary source.

Where it falls short. It is documentation, not a course: no exercises, no certificate, no tutor. It tells you what Google recommends, not how to prioritise on your site.

Verdict. Read it before paying for anything. Every other course on this list builds on it.

2. Ahrefs Academy: the best free video course for beginners

What it is. Ahrefs Academy publishes free video courses. The SEO Course for Beginners has 14 lessons for 2 hours in total and covers keyword research, on-page SEO and link building. The academy also offers a free Answer Engine Optimization course (12 lessons, 1 h 26) on how AI search works and how brands get recommended on AI platforms, an advanced link building course (15 lessons, 1 h 48) and a 67-question certification exam attached to its course on using the Ahrefs tool.

Who it is for. Beginners who want the full logic of SEO in an afternoon, and marketers who want a first view of AI answers.

Where it falls short. The beginner course has no certificate of its own, and part of the catalogue teaches the Ahrefs tool rather than SEO in general.

Verdict. The best free starting point after the Google guide, and the AEO course is one of the few free ones on AI visibility.

3. Semrush Academy: short free modules with a certificate

What it is. Semrush Academy offers free courses, each with a certificate. The SEO ones checked this month include On-Page SEO and AI Search Essentials (24 lessons, about 1 hour), Keyword Research Essentials (25 lessons, about 1 hour) and AI Search Operating System (10 lessons, 41 minutes), plus regular one-hour webinars on AI visibility.

Who it is for. Marketers who want a stack of short certificates to show on LinkedIn, and teams already using Semrush.

Where it falls short. The courses are tied to the Semrush tool, and an hour per subject stays introductory.

Verdict. Good for quick, recognised certificates; pair it with a course that makes you practise on your own site.

4. UC Davis SEO Specialization on Coursera: the most structured certificate

What it is. The Search Engine Optimization Specialization from the University of California, Davis has 5 courses, takes about 2 months at 10 hours a week, targets beginners and ends with a shareable certificate. It is rated 4.6 out of 5 from 13,110 reviews on Coursera.

Price. It is included in Coursera Plus, at $59 per month with a 7-day free trial or $399 per year. Financial aid is available.

Where it falls short. The course page does not say how much of the content covers AI answers, and two months is a real time commitment.

Verdict. The choice when a university name on the certificate matters to your employer.

5. HubSpot Academy AEO Fundamentals: the free course on AI answers

What it is. HubSpot retired its free SEO certification in June 2026 and replaced it with AEO Fundamentals, a free certification course of 7 lessons and 19 videos (2 h 20) on optimising content for AI Overviews, answer engines and AI citations. A second free course applies the same method inside HubSpot.

Who it is for. Marketers who already know SEO basics and need to understand how AI answers choose their sources.

Where it falls short. It assumes the classic SEO foundations are already in place and does not teach them.

Verdict. The best free certificate focused on AI answers in 2026.

6. Formaseo (Abondance network): the reference paid catalogue in French

What it is. Formaseo is the training platform of the Abondance network. Its beginner course, Les fondamentaux du SEO, is taught by Olivier Andrieu (12 hours, 100 videos) and is sold as an SEO and GEO fundamentals pack at 349 euros excl. VAT. The catalogue also lists Maîtriser l'AI Search at 299 euros, and specialised courses on e-commerce SEO (12 hours), Google Business Profile (2 hours) and SEO automation (4 hours). The courses are designed to prepare the Qaseo, Ceseo and ix-SEO certifications, which are issued by other bodies. Access lasts one year with updates, extendable for 39 euros excl. VAT.

Who it is for. French-speaking professionals who want an expert-led video catalogue and can have it funded by their employer's training budget.

Where it falls short. French only, and Formaseo does not issue its own certificate of completion.

Verdict. The strongest paid option for a French-speaking team.

7. Google Digital Marketing and E-commerce Certificate: for a career change

What it is. A Google professional certificate on Coursera: 8 courses, about 6 months at 10 hours a week, beginner level. SEO is covered in the second course ("Attract and Engage Customers with Digital Marketing"), and recent modules add AI skills for marketing.

Who it is for. People moving into a digital marketing job who want SEO as one skill among several.

Where it falls short. SEO is one course out of eight, so it goes less deep than a dedicated SEO programme.

Verdict. A career certificate, not an SEO specialisation.

8. OpenClassrooms: the free course in French

What it is. Augmentez votre trafic grâce au référencement naturel (SEO) is a free-access course of about 10 hours, rated easy, taught by Leo Sider and last updated on 23 January 2025. It covers keyword choice, site improvements, backlinks and measuring results with Google Analytics and Search Console.

Where it falls short. The last update predates the spread of AI answers, and the page does not mention a certificate.

Verdict. A solid free base for French speakers, to complete with a course on AI search.

9. Sorank free GEO course: focused on visibility in AI answers

What it is. The free GEO course on the Sorank site is a video course of about two hours on generative engine optimization: the role of AI in SEO, netlinking strategy and how to generate traffic. It is aimed at SEO agencies and freelancers, online entrepreneurs and companies with an SEO team. The same page presents a paid programme, SEO IA Pro (999 euros, lifetime access, more than 30 videos, AI netlinking strategies, API setups with DataForSEO, Make and n8n, and a private members' group). I also run a free GEO masterclass, sent by email, where I show the AI SEO system I use with Search Console and an AI assistant.

Where it falls short. No certificate, and it assumes you want to apply GEO to your own site rather than learn SEO theory.

Verdict. Useful after the foundations, when the question becomes how to appear in ChatGPT, Gemini or AI Overviews.

Which SEO training course should you choose for your level?

The right SEO course depends on where you start and what you need to prove. Beginners should stack free resources before paying; practitioners should pay only for depth or for a recognised certificate.

  • Complete beginner: Google SEO Starter Guide, then the Ahrefs SEO Course for Beginners. Keep the GEO and SEO glossary open for the vocabulary.
  • Marketer who needs a certificate: Semrush Academy for quick certificates, UC Davis on Coursera for a university one.
  • Practitioner who must handle AI answers: HubSpot AEO Fundamentals, the Ahrefs AEO course, then the Sorank GEO course.
  • French-speaking team with a training budget: Formaseo.
  • Career change: the Google Digital Marketing and E-commerce Certificate.

A course gives you the method; staying current takes a reading routine. For that, see our selections of the best SEO and digital marketing blogs and the best SEO podcasts.

How can you finance an SEO training course?

Most SEO courses can be financed without a public scheme, because the best foundations are free. For paid courses, the usual route is your employer's training budget: present the course page, its duration, its price and the skill it adds to your role, and ask before enrolling.

  • Start free: Google, Ahrefs, Semrush and HubSpot cover the foundations and AI answers at no cost.
  • Employer budget: paid catalogues such as Formaseo state that employer training funds can cover them in France; check the equivalent with your HR team.
  • Subscription instead of a course: Coursera Plus gives access to both certificates in this ranking for one monthly or yearly price.
  • Check eligibility on official sites only: where a national training scheme exists, verify the course on the government portal, never through a caller or an advert.

SEO trainer or in-company speaker: how do you choose and what does it cost?

An SEO trainer is useful when a team needs a programme built around its own site, which online courses cannot do. Three formats exist: inter-company sessions (several companies in one room or virtual class), intra-company sessions (one team, one programme) and guest lectures in schools.

Observed prices, checked in October 2026: the French provider CNFCE lists its two-day SEO course at 1,590 euros excl. VAT per trainee in inter-company sessions and 3,580 euros excl. VAT per group in intra-company sessions. Online catalogues such as Formaseo sell individual courses at 299 euros or 349 euros excl. VAT. Independent trainers and school speakers set their rates by quote; I found no reliable published benchmark for them, so ask for a written proposal.

To choose an SEO trainer, check four points:

  1. Live proof: sites they run or ran, with Search Console results they can show.
  2. A written programme: objectives, duration, exercises and how skills are assessed.
  3. Practice on your site: at least half of the time spent on your pages, your keywords and your competitors.
  4. Up to date on AI answers: ask what the programme says about AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

If you would rather hire someone to do the work than to teach it, see our ranking of the best SEO consultants in France.

What does SEO software do that a course does not, and the reverse?

Training gives you judgement; software gives you time. The two answer different needs, and most teams need both.

A course teaches what no software decides for you: the strategy, which market to attack first, when to migrate a site, how to negotiate a partnership, which trade-off to accept. Those decisions stay human.

Sorank is SEO and GEO software on autopilot that takes the repetitive part. It reads your site, creates the questions your customers ask AI assistants and asks them every week to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to see whether your brand is mentioned, finds your Google and AI competitors and their keywords, fills an editorial calendar, writes the articles (with internal links, sources, FAQ, meta tags and JSON-LD schema) and publishes them on more than 10 CMS. For on-page checks, the free Sorank Chrome extension shows recommendations on any page, and our free SEO tools cover keyword research, AI Overview checks and llms.txt generation. Plans start at $99 per month, or $49 per month billed annually, and SEO results usually take 2 to 4 months.

Conclusion: which SEO training course is the best in 2027?

Start with the free courses (Google, Ahrefs, Semrush), add a certificate only if you need to prove it (UC Davis, HubSpot), and choose any course updated for AI answers over an older, longer one. Once you know what to do, the bottleneck becomes the time to do it every week. To hand the keyword research, writing, publishing and AI tracking to software, see Sorank plans and the 3-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free SEO training course?

The best free start is Google's SEO Starter Guide followed by the Ahrefs SEO Course for Beginners, 14 lessons in about 2 hours. Semrush Academy adds free courses with certificates, including one on on-page SEO and AI search. For AI answers specifically, HubSpot's AEO Fundamentals is free and certified.

Is an SEO certification worth it?

A certificate helps when an employer or a client asks for proof, and a university or Google certificate on Coursera carries the most weight. It does not replace results: a site you ranked, with Search Console data to show, convinces more than any badge. Treat certificates as a complement to practice.

How long does it take to learn SEO?

The foundations take a few hours to a few weeks: the Ahrefs beginner course lasts 2 hours, the UC Davis specialization about 2 months at 10 hours a week. Applying them takes longer, because SEO results on a site usually appear after 2 to 4 months. Practising on a real site from the first week shortens the learning curve.
