In short

the best AI Overviews tracking tools in 2027 are Semrush if you want AI Overviews and Google AI Mode inside the rank tracker you already use, Advanced Web Ranking if you need to know exactly where your citation sits inside the AI Overview, and SE Ranking for daily tracking of AI Overviews and AI Mode at a mid-range price. Ahrefs, SISTRIX and seoClarity complete the list for backlink-led teams, European markets and large companies. Google Search Console now shows your impressions in AI features for free, and the free Sorank AI Overview Checker answers one question at a time: does this query show an AI Overview, and is my site cited in it?

Want to go further? Ask

Transparency: Sorank is our own software. The paid Sorank plans do not track AI Overviews, so Sorank is not ranked among the paid tools; only our free checker appears, at the place where it is useful. I ranked every tool on the same criteria, using only what each company publishes on its own website and documentation, checked in October 2026.

An AI Overviews tracking tool checks your keywords in Google on a schedule and records whether an AI Overview appears, which sources it cites and whether your site is one of them. The stakes are large: Google states that AI Overviews now have over 2.5 billion users each month, and that AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users a year after its launch. A classic rank tracker that only reports your blue link position misses the block that now sits above it.

What does an AI Overviews tracking tool measure?

An AI Overviews tracking tool measures four things per keyword: whether Google shows an AI Overview, which URLs the AI Overview cites, whether your domain is among them, and how that changes over time. The better tools add the position of your citation inside the block, the competitors cited in your place, and the same checks in Google AI Mode.

These measurements differ from a ranking. A page can rank third in the organic results and be absent from the AI Overview above it, and the AI Overview can cite pages that do not hold the top organic positions. That is why a tracker built for AI Overviews reports citations, not only positions. The metrics to look for:

  • AI Overview presence: the share of your tracked keywords that trigger an AI Overview. It tells you how much of your keyword set is exposed.
  • Citation rate: the share of those AI Overviews that cite your domain.
  • Citation position: where your link appears among the sources. Sources visible without clicking "show more" are the most exposed ones.
  • Competitors cited: the domains Google picks instead of yours, which show you the pages to study.
  • AI Mode coverage: AI Mode is a conversational answer, so tools track mentions and cited sources there rather than a position.

The stakes are measurable. In a Pew Research Center study of the browsing data of 900 US adults, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when none appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary on only 1% of visits. You can estimate what that means for your own pages with our SERP CTR calculator.

Can Google Search Console track AI Overviews?

Partly, since 2026. Google launched Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on 3 June 2026 and states that they were rolled out to all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026. They show how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date.

What these reports leave out explains why third-party tools still exist. The help documentation describes impressions only: no clicks, no click-through rate, and no breakdown by search query. You learn that a page appeared in an AI feature, not for which keyword, not whether it was the first or the fifth source, and not which competitors were cited next to it. In the main Performance report, Google's documentation on AI features confirms that traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted inside the overall Web search data. A SERP tracker fills the gap at keyword level.

How I ranked these AI Overviews tracking tools

I chose the criteria before checking who wins them, and applied them identically to every tool:

  1. AI Overviews detection: does the tool flag the keywords that trigger an AI Overview.
  2. Citation tracking: does it tell you whether your domain is cited, and where.
  3. AI Mode: does it also track Google AI Mode.
  4. Frequency: daily, weekly or on demand.
  5. Volume on the entry plan: keywords or prompts included.
  6. Entry price, as published on the company's own pricing page in October 2026, in the currency it displays.

I used no review sites and no third-party blogs for features or prices. Some vendors show prices in the visitor's local currency; the figures below are the ones displayed when I checked. When a company does not publish a figure, the article says so. Prices change often, so check them again on the day you buy.

The 8 best AI Overviews tracking tools in 2027

1. Semrush: best for adding AI Overviews to daily rank tracking

What it does. Semrush reports AI Overview data across several tools, including Position Tracking, Organic Research and the Keyword Magic Tool. Its knowledge base explains that, given how AI Overviews work, your domain is counted when it is one of the data sources used for the answer. In Position Tracking, you can filter your tracked keywords on the AI Overview feature, see which ones trigger it and check whether your pages are among the sources, next to the competitors you add to the campaign.

AI Mode. Semrush added Google AI Mode as a search engine in Position Tracking in July 2025, in beta, limited at launch to US desktop results and 50 AI Mode keywords per account.

Pricing. The SEO plan costs $139 per month, or $117.33 per month billed annually, with 500 keywords tracked daily. The plans that add AI search visibility start at $199 per month (Starter). A 7-day free trial is offered. Checked October 2026.

Where it falls short. The AI Mode option arrived with tight limits, so check your plan's allowance before building a large AI Mode project.

Verdict. I would choose it when a team already tracks keywords in Semrush and wants AI Overviews in the same daily report.

2. Advanced Web Ranking: best for citation detail inside the AI Overview

What it does. Advanced Web Ranking (AWR) is a dedicated rank tracker. Its AIO Citation Rank metric, documented in its help center, shows where each cited source appears inside a Google AI Overview: sidebar sources first, then sources inside the answer text. Sources visible without clicking "show more" are flagged as Top AIO Sources. The metric is a column in the Keyword Ranking and Top Sites reports, and AWR states that it is included in all plans. AWR also tracks Google AI Mode and lists AI visibility tracking, AI citations and mentions on its Pro plan.

Pricing. Pro at $139 per month for 7,000 keywords, Agency at $279, Enterprise at $699, with 10% off on annual billing and a 30-day money-back guarantee. The keyword allowance is based on weekly updates; daily updates use more of it. Checked October 2026.

Where it falls short. AWR is a tracker and nothing else: no keyword research suite or backlink index comparable to the large platforms.

Verdict. I would choose it when being cited is no longer enough and you need to know whether your citation is visible or buried.

3. SE Ranking: best value for daily AI Overviews and AI Mode tracking

What it does. SE Ranking combines a rank tracker with an AI Results Tracker covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT. Its rank tracker page describes daily positions of your links and brand mentions in AI-generated answers, with competitor comparison and history.

Pricing. The pricing page displayed in euros when I checked: Core at €109 per month, or €87.20 billed annually, with 2,000 keywords and 100 prompts tracked daily. The AI Results Tracker for AI Overviews and AI Mode comes with the AI Search add-on, from €79 per month (€63.20 billed annually) for 200 prompts. Core includes a 14-day free trial. Checked October 2026.

Where it falls short. The full AI Overviews and AI Mode tracking sits in a paid add-on, so the real entry cost is the plan plus the add-on.

Verdict. I would choose it for a small team that wants daily AI Overviews and AI Mode data without an enterprise budget.

What it does. Ahrefs Rank Tracker monitors 19 SERP features, including AI Overviews, so you see which tracked keywords trigger one. Its Brand Radar module covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, with brand mentions, citations and competitor benchmarks, and custom prompts tracked daily, weekly or monthly.

Pricing. Lite at $129 per month with 750 tracked keywords and 5 tracked AI prompts, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449. Brand Radar AI, the extended version with Ahrefs' prompt database, starts at $199 per month on top. Checked October 2026.

Where it falls short. The Rank Tracker page lists weekly updates, and the AI prompt allowance on the core plans is small.

Verdict. I would choose it for a team that already lives in Ahrefs for backlinks and wants AI visibility in the same account.

5. SISTRIX: best for European markets, with AI features included for now

What it does. SISTRIX, known for its Visibility Index, tracks four AI platforms: Google AI Overviews, where it measures whether and where your domain is cited, Google AI Mode, where it analyzes mentions and sources, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Its AI Check and Prompt Tracking features are labeled beta.

Pricing. Start at €119 per month, Plus at €239, Professional at €419, Premium at €799, cancelable monthly. SISTRIX states that its AI analyses are currently free in all packages and that it may price them separately later. Checked October 2026.

Where it falls short. The AI features are still in beta, and the pricing of AI tracking may change.

Verdict. I would choose it for a team working on German or other European markets that wants AI Overviews data inside its existing visibility tool.

6. seoClarity: best for large companies

What it does. seoClarity's ArcAI offer includes visibility tracking across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, with brand mentions and citations, sentiment analysis and competitor benchmarks. Its pricing page states that prompt queries start at 500.

Pricing. Not published: every plan reads "Ask for a Quote". Checked October 2026.

Where it falls short. No public price and a sales process sized for enterprise teams.

Verdict. I would choose it for a large site with thousands of keywords and a dedicated SEO team.

7. Google Search Console: best free source of AI Overviews impressions

What it does. The Search Generative AI performance report shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date, with hourly to monthly granularity. It is the only source of real Google data in this list.

Pricing. Free.

Where it falls short. Impressions only, no queries, no clicks, no competitors.

Verdict. Turn it on for every site. It tells you which pages Google already uses, and the paid tools tell you for which keywords and against whom.

8. Sorank AI Overview Checker: best free spot check

What it does. The free Sorank AI Overview Checker takes a query and a domain. It submits the query to Google, detects whether an AI Overview is displayed, extracts the sources it cites, checks whether your domain is among them, and reports the position of your citation and the total number of sources.

Pricing. Free, no subscription.

Where it falls short. It is a one-off check: one query, one Google locale, one moment. AI Overviews vary by location and context, so run the query once per target country, and use a paid tracker for history.

Verdict. I would use it before buying anything, to test the ten queries that matter most and see whether tracking is worth paying for.

Which AI Overviews tracking tool should you choose?

The right tool depends on what you already pay for and how precise the answer must be.

  • You already use Semrush or Ahrefs: start with the AI Overviews data in your current plan before adding anything.
  • You need citation position, not only presence: Advanced Web Ranking.
  • You want daily AI Overviews and AI Mode data on a mid-range budget: SE Ranking with the AI Search add-on.
  • You work on European markets: SISTRIX, while its AI features are included.
  • You run a large site with an SEO team: seoClarity.
  • You have no budget yet: Google Search Console plus the free AI Overview Checker on your key queries.

If your buyers also ask ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity, AI Overviews tracking covers only Google. The other assistants need a different kind of tool, compared in our guide to the best ChatGPT tracking tools.

How do you get cited in a Google AI Overview?

Google states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet. The same SEO fundamentals apply, and Google adds that no special markup, schema or AI text file is needed. Indexing and serving are never guaranteed, even when a page meets every requirement.

Google's documentation lists the practices that matter: allow crawling in robots.txt and in your CDN, make content findable through internal links, keep important content in text form, support it with quality images and videos, and make sure structured data matches the visible text. If you limit snippets with nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet, you also limit what can appear in AI features.

From there, the work is editorial. The Google AI Overviews answer is assembled from passages, so pages that answer a question in their first lines, with self-contained sections, tables and sourced figures, give Google something to quote. Read the cited competitors' pages for each keyword where you are absent, and compare them with yours using the method in our SEO analysis guide.

What does a tracking tool not do?

A tracking tool measures; it does not write the page that would earn the citation. Every tool in this list tells you where you are absent, and the next step is producing content that answers those queries, week after week.

That step is what Sorank automates. The software reads your site, finds your competitors' keywords on Google and in the AI, fills an editorial calendar, writes the articles with sources, internal links, FAQ and JSON-LD schema, and publishes them automatically on more than 10 CMS. It also asks your buyers' questions every week to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It does not track AI Overviews: for that measurement, use one of the tools above.

Conclusion

For most teams, the best AI Overviews tracking setup in 2026 is Google Search Console for free impressions plus one SERP tracker for keyword-level citations: Semrush if you already use it, Advanced Web Ranking for citation detail, SE Ranking for a mid-range budget. Test your key queries with the free checker first, then pay for tracking where AI Overviews appear. When the tracking shows the queries where competitors are cited instead of you, Sorank writes and publishes the articles that answer them: see the Sorank plans and the 3-day free trial, from $49 per month billed annually.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI Overviews tracker?

Yes, two free options cover different needs. Google Search Console's generative AI performance report shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. The free Sorank AI Overview Checker tests one query at a time and tells you whether an AI Overview appears and whether your domain is cited. Neither keeps a keyword-level history of citations, which is what paid trackers add.

Can you track Google AI Mode like AI Overviews?

Yes, but the metric is different. AI Mode gives a conversational answer rather than a list of results, so tools record whether your brand is mentioned and which sources are cited. Semrush, Advanced Web Ranking, SE Ranking, Ahrefs Brand Radar, SISTRIX and seoClarity all list AI Mode tracking, and Search Console counts AI Mode impressions in its generative AI report.

How often should you check AI Overviews?

Weekly is enough for most sites, and daily makes sense for competitive commercial keywords. AI Overviews change with location, device and time, so one check proves little and a trend over several weeks is what matters. Keep the same keyword list and location from week to week so the numbers stay comparable.
