In short
a GEO tool helps your brand get cited in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. The best ones do three jobs: track whether you are mentioned on the questions buyers ask, show which sources the AI cites instead of you, and help you publish content those answers can quote. Sorank comes first because it covers all three on autopilot; Semrush and Ahrefs add AI visibility modules to their suites; free tools from Google and HubSpot complete the picture.

The category of GEO tools (generative engine optimization, also sold as AEO, answer engine optimization) barely existed before 2024. It grew out of research such as GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (KDD 2024), which showed that some content changes raise a source's visibility in generative answers by up to 40%, and out of a change in behavior: in a study of 900 US adults, the Pew Research Center found that users clicked a classic result on 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, against 15% without. This ranking compares the tools that help you be part of those answers. Sorank is our product; we explain where it fits and where other tools are better.

Classic SEO tools measure positions on Google. A GEO tool measures something else: whether an AI assistant names your brand when it answers a question, how often, next to which competitors, and from which sources. The useful features fall into four groups:
Most tools cover one or two of these groups. Our separate ranking of AI visibility tools focuses on the tracking part only.
We scored each tool on coverage of the four groups above, the number of assistants tracked, the reliability of measurement (repeated runs rather than one test), the work left to the user, and price for a small team or an agency. Prices come from each vendor's pricing or help pages in October 2026.
Sorank is SEO and GEO software that runs on autopilot. Its AI mention tracking follows 25 to 150 prompts depending on the plan in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, plus Perplexity and Grok from the Pro plan, and shows which brands are cited in your place. The GEO leaderboard ranks you against competitors, and the reference sources view lists the sites the AI relies on. Then Sorank acts: the article generator writes and publishes answer-first articles with sources and tables, and Sorank obtains natural backlinks automatically from its network of 5,000+ users.

Semrush added an AI Visibility Toolkit to its suite: brand performance across AI assistants and Google's AI features, prompt tracking, and competitive comparison. For teams already on Semrush, it keeps AI data next to classic SEO data. Our Semrush review covers the rest of the suite.
Brand Radar is an Ahrefs add-on that measures your brand's presence in AI answers: custom prompts for your own questions and an AI Visibility Index to benchmark against a large prompt database. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot.
A free, one-off check of how AI models describe your brand, with a score out of 100 on sentiment, presence, recognition, share of voice and competition. Good for a first diagnosis; HubSpot sells ongoing monitoring separately.
Google counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report, inside the Web search type, as stated in AI features and your website. You cannot isolate AI traffic there, but it is the only first-party source on how Google's AI surfaces send you visitors.
The reference crawler for technical audits. For GEO, use it to check that pages return 200, are not blocked to AI crawlers in robots.txt, carry consistent structured data and expose their main content in HTML. See our ranking of technical SEO tools.
A free validator for structured data. Google says no special markup is needed for AI features, but accurate Organization, Product, Article or FAQ markup helps search engines understand your entity and content.
Tip
Before paying for any tool, run five of your buyers' questions by hand in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and note who is cited. If competitors appear and you do not, a GEO tool will pay off; if nobody in your market is cited yet, start with content.
Several free tools cover the first steps: the GEO audit checks whether a page is ready to be quoted, the LLM citation checker tests a question, the AI visibility score calculator turns your results into a score, and the llms.txt generator writes that optional file. For a full manual method, follow our AI visibility audit.
| Your situation | Recommended choice |
|---|---|
| Small business without an SEO team | Sorank: tracking plus content and links on autopilot |
| Team already on Semrush or Ahrefs | Their AI module, plus a content process |
| Agency reporting to clients | Sorank or a suite module, with white-label reports |
| First diagnosis, no budget | HubSpot AI Search Grader, Sorank's free GEO audit, manual prompt checks |
| Technical check of AI crawler access | Screaming Frog and Search Console |
Watch out
AI answers change from one run to the next. A tool that tests each prompt once a month gives a fragile number; prefer regular runs on a fixed panel of questions, and judge trends over several weeks.
Measuring AI visibility is the start; publishing quotable content and earning mentions is what moves it. Choose a tool that covers both, or pair a tracker with a content process. To understand the discipline itself, read GEO vs SEO and AEO vs SEO, or see our AI citation report. To try the autopilot approach, start with the Sorank plans and their 3-day free trial.
This ranking reflects my own experience and opinion as an SEO expert with more than 7 years in the field. It is based on verified facts, but the order itself is my personal view.
An AI visibility tool measures whether assistants mention your brand. A GEO tool in the broad sense also helps you improve that visibility: auditing citability, producing answer-first content and earning mentions on the sources AI reads. Some tools only measure, others measure and act.
For a first diagnosis, yes: manual checks in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, Search Console and free audits show where you stand. To follow progress reliably, you need repeated runs on a fixed list of questions, which is what paid tracking tools automate.
Enough to cover your offers and your buyers' main questions, usually 25 to 50 for a small business and up to 150 or more for a brand with several products or markets. Choose questions that real buyers ask before a purchase rather than your brand name.
