The headline is the first thing a searcher reads, in Google and in the answers of the AIs that cite your page. Two pages on the same topic can get very different click-through rates only because of their title. A good title tag is specific, shows the keyword early and is not cut off.
What the score is based on
- Length: 40 to 60 characters, long enough to describe the page and short enough to be shown in full.
- Width in Google: beyond about 580 pixels on desktop, the end is replaced by an ellipsis.
- Keyword: present, and in the first half of the title.
- Number and format: lists, questions, how-tos and comparisons get clicked more than flat statements.
- Click words and style: one concrete benefit word, no capitals everywhere, no stacked exclamation marks.
Tips for a better headline
- Start with what the searcher wants, then add what makes your page different.
- Write several versions and keep the one with the best score and the clearest promise.
- Keep the brand at the end of the title tag, after a separator.
