In short

Aurélien Denis is the most complete profile among the best web design consultants in France for a WordPress or WooCommerce project built to last: he has been building and maintaining sites since 2007 and names projects for SEOPress, Université Savoie Mont Blanc and the agap2 group. Grégoire Noyelle is a better fit for a media outlet or an institution that wants a custom theme and a trained team, Thierry Chopain for a brand or a firm looking for award-winning design with a published starting price, and Christophe Andrieu for a team that needs a designer able to deliver clean, accessible front-end code. The right choice depends first on what your site must do after launch, and on who will keep it running.

Choosing among the best web design consultants in France means handing the planning, design or development of your site to an independent developer or web designer rather than to an agency. The person who listens to you at the first meeting is the one who draws the mockups or writes the code. A professional site must also follow a few rules from launch, such as collecting consent before setting non-essential cookies, as set out on the official Service Public Entreprendre page of the French administration. This ranking brings together ten freelancers, checked one by one, and says for each which type of project they suit.

Freelancer or web agency: what changes for your site?

A freelance developer or web designer carries your project personally, from scoping to launch. Discussions, design decisions and technical choices all go through the same person, who knows your site's code because they wrote it.

This format has three advantages for a very small business, an SME or a non-profit: a single point of contact, quotes that are often tighter than at an agency because there is no structure to fund, and maintenance handled by someone who knows the site in detail. It also has two limits: few freelancers cover strategy, design, development and copywriting on their own, and a long absence delays delivery. Several profiles on this list solve this with a network of regular partners (designers, developers, illustrators) whom they manage for you.

If your project requires a complete brand overhaul, a business application, several languages and an acquisition campaign at the same time, an agency team is often a better fit. Our ranking of the 10 best web design agencies in France (2027) covers that case.

How did we rank these web design consultants?

Five criteria, in this order, applied only to what each freelancer publishes on their own site. Every site on this list was reviewed on 16 October 2026, and this page is scheduled for review every 90 days.

1. Building websites is the core business. Developers and web designers whose work is to design and build websites come before those for whom it is a sideline to training, SEO or auditing.

2. Proof you can check yourself. Named projects you can open, awards given by an external jury (Awwwards, FWA, Webby Awards), talks at industry events such as WordCamps, or a certification issued by a third-party body count for more than a number of projects shown without detail.

3. An offer you can read before the first call. A published starting price, budget ranges, a project method described step by step or a clear list of services.

4. Fit with a type of project. We deliberately kept profiles that serve different needs (high-end brochure site, WooCommerce shop, custom WordPress theme, Webflow site, application with a back office) and said which ones.

5. Real, independent activity. A live website, the person's name displayed, a freelancer or micro-business that carries out the core of the work personally. Studios and agencies that rely on a salaried team were left out, as was a designer who is now employed by a firm.

What we deliberately did not do: we did not repeat the conversion gains, visitor numbers or delivery times announced, because there is no way to verify them from outside. Rankings of freelancers published by a freelancer on their own site did not count as proof. We did not test any client site or contact the references cited.

The 10 best web design consultants in France

1. Aurélien Denis

Aurélien Denis has been a WordPress and WooCommerce consultant and developer since 2007, through his company WP channel, headquartered in Morcenx-la-Nouvelle, in the Landes department. He builds and redesigns brochure sites, online shops, media sites and multisite platforms, and writes that he maintains more than 100 active sites. His portfolio page names several projects: the site of the SEOPress plugin, the site of Université Savoie Mont Blanc, a multisite platform for the agap2 group, the platform of the SEO Camp association, the online shop of L'Atelier du Piment d'Espelette and a site with school visit booking for the Centre Pédagogique de la Résistance et de la Déportation in Mont-de-Marsan. He chaired the WordPress Francophone association in 2016 and 2017, co-organised WordCamp Bordeaux and WordCamp Biarritz, and publishes the talks he gave at the Paris and Toulouse WordCamps. He calls on a network of partners (security, SEO, social media) when the project requires it. His site shows 20 reviews rated 5 stars. The only published price concerns GDPR compliance, from €420 excl. VAT: website creation is quoted on request.

Best for: SMEs, institutions and online retailers that want a WordPress or WooCommerce site built and maintained by the same person for years. On the first call, ask which parts of the project he hands to his partners.

2. Grégoire Noyelle

His CV states that he has been building custom WordPress platforms since 2006 and Full Site Editing (FSE) themes since 2022. He details several projects: the complete theme for the Ligue de défense des conducteurs, built with the digital services company Globalis during a migration from Joomla, and site migrations for IHU ICAN, Formagora and Altawest. His home page also shows the logos of organisations that have trusted him, including CNRS, the Collège de France and Ouest-France. A trainer as well, he launched one of the first complete WordPress training courses at Gobelins in 2010 and offers Qualiopi-compliant training (Qualiopi is the French quality certification for training providers) from his centre in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. In 2026, he published a plugin that opens a WordPress site's content to AI agents, with permissions set site by site. His prices are not published.

Best for: media outlets, research institutions and non-profits that want a custom WordPress theme, a clean migration away from an old page builder and a team trained to edit content. For a complete visual identity, he mentions collaborations with designers: check who signs the mockups.

His site lists his awards: five Awwwards “Site of the Day” (including OVA investment and 21TSI in 2025), two “FWA of the Day”, a Webby Award in 2022 for the site of the law firm Pradel Avocats and several CSS Design Awards prizes. He cites projects for Acor, Oram photographe, Teria, Bec Restaurant and Parhélie Avocat. He remains the single point of contact and works with freelance developers, motion designers and illustrators depending on the project. He publishes starting prices, including VAT: €900 for a diagnosis, €2,950 for an identity redesign, €7,900 for a one-page site and €11,550 for a brochure site.

Best for: independent professionals, firms, architects and premium brands that want a site and an identity that match their positioning. The starting budget is high, and development goes through a partner: ask who codes the site and who will maintain it.

What should you check before handing the creation of your site to a freelancer?

Four points to raise on the first call, whatever the profile.

  • Who owns the domain name, the hosting and the accounts. Have the domain, the hosting, the Webflow or Shopify subscription and the paid plugin licences registered in your name, and keep administrator access. A freelancer who disappears must not take your site with them.
  • What the quote contains. Ask whether the mockup, the copywriting, the content import, the training and the launch are included, and how many rounds of revisions are planned. A quote broken down by item is easier to compare.
  • What happens after launch. A WordPress site needs regular updates and backups. Ask whether the freelancer offers a maintenance contract, at what price, and who steps in if the site goes down.
  • The rules your site must follow. Cookie banner, legal notices and, for public bodies and some companies, accessibility under the RGAA framework published by the French State. Ask how the freelancer handles them and whether a certification such as Opquast backs their method.

Where does this ranking stop?

Three limits, stated clearly.

It is based on public information. We read what each freelancer publishes and checked that each site was live on 16 October 2026. We did not test any client site or confirm any testimonial. A developer who communicates little and delivers very well will be underrated here.

It does not know your project. The right profile for a WooCommerce marketplace is rarely the right one for an architecture firm's site. The Best for lines matter more than the rank number. If your project goes beyond what one person can carry, see our ranking of the best web design agencies in France.

It ages. Freelancers' prices, offers and availability change quickly. Check on each one's site before you sign.

What can a web design consultant do that software cannot?

A web freelancer translates your business into pages, journeys and features: what visitors must find first, what needs custom development, what an existing theme already covers. These choices require knowing your trade and your customers. Once the site is live, the work that comes back every week is publishing the content that gets it found, and that is often where a new site stays without visitors.

That is what Sorank automates: after an audit of your site, the platform finds your keywords, writes and publishes articles optimised for Google and for AI assistants, and shows you when an AI assistant cites your brand. Many companies combine the two: the freelancer to build the site, the software to keep feeding it without interruption.

Conclusion

The best web design consultant is the one whose past projects resemble yours. For a WordPress or WooCommerce site built and maintained over time, Aurélien Denis offers the most numerous and most easily verified references. For a custom theme and a trained team, Grégoire Noyelle. For a premium brand image with a price known in advance, Thierry Chopain. For accessible design delivered as clean code, Christophe Andrieu. And to publish content every week that gets your new site cited by Google and by AI assistants, discover Sorank.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to have a freelancer build a website in France?

Few freelancers in this ranking publish a price. Thierry Chopain lists a brochure site from €11,550 incl. VAT and a one-page site from €7,900 incl. VAT, Willy Bahuaud offers budget ranges from €1,000 to more than €10,000, and Aurélien Denis publishes GDPR compliance from €420 excl. VAT. The others prepare a quote based on the number of pages, the design and the features, to which hosting and maintenance are added.

Should you choose a freelancer or an agency to build your website?

A freelancer suits you when you want a single point of contact who designs or codes your site personally and can maintain it. An agency becomes a better fit when the project calls at the same time for a brand identity, custom development, copywriting and acquisition, with a team that does not depend on a single person.

How do you check that a freelance developer or web designer is reliable?

Open the sites they cite as past work and check that they are live, look for awards given by an external jury or talks at industry events, and ask for references you can call. Have the domain name, the hosting and the licences registered in your name, and ask for an itemised quote that specifies what happens after launch.
