Verify your Google Business Profile: video, phone, email or postcard, how long each takes, what Google checks, and how to fix a failed or stuck verification.

In short
to verify a Google Business Profile, claim or create the listing at business.google.com, click Get verified and complete the method Google offers you: a video recording, a live video call, a phone call or text, an email, a postcard or, in some cases, instant verification. You cannot choose the method; Google picks it based on your business type, region and public information. After you complete it, Google reviews the evidence in up to 5 business days; a postcard code arrives within 14 days and expires after 30.

To verify a Google business listing is to prove to Google that you run the business at the address or in the area you declare. Until it is verified, your edits are not published, you cannot reply to reviews and the profile carries little weight in the map results. Google's official verification page lists the methods; this guide adds what each one checks, how long it takes and what to do when it fails.
A Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in Google Maps and in the map block of local searches. Verification unlocks everything that makes it useful:
Verification is also the first step of any local SEO work: categories, posts and review management only pay off on a listing you control.
Before you start, check that the business fits Google's rules. The guidelines for representing your business on Google require a business that "has a physical location that customers can visit, or travels to customers where they are". In short:
The business name must "reflect your business's real-world name", without slogans, city names or service keywords added. A name stuffed with keywords is one of the most common reasons a profile is sent back for review or suspended.
Search for your business name on Google Maps. If a listing exists, open it and select Own this business or Claim this business; otherwise go to business.google.com and add it. If someone else already manages it, request ownership: Google's ownership request page says the current owner "has 3 days to respond", after which you may be able to claim it.
Enter the exact name, address or service area, main category, phone number and website. Make them match your website, signage and invoices: Google compares them with public information. Consistent NAP data (name, address, phone) across the web reduces the chance of extra checks.
Google displays the methods available for your profile. Some businesses must complete more than one. Complete the method, then wait for the review.
After the steps, Google reviews your information. Avoid changing the name, address or category during that time: changes can restart the process.
Tip
Verify your website in Google Search Console with the same Google account before claiming the profile. Google lists Search Console verification as one of the cases where a Business Profile can be verified instantly.
| Method | What you need | Typical delay (Google's figures) |
|---|---|---|
| Video recording | A phone at the business, one continuous live video of at least 30 seconds | Review up to 5 business days |
| Live video call | Be at the business during its hours, show location and proof of management | During the call, then review |
| Phone or text | Answer the business phone or receive a text (automated phone menus cannot receive the code) | Code in minutes |
| Access to the email address shown on the verification screen | Code in minutes | |
| Postcard | A real mailing address; do not edit name, address or category while waiting | Most codes within 14 days, valid 30 days |
| Instant | Website verified in Search Console, or bulk verification | Immediate when offered |
| Bulk verification | 10 or more locations of the same business, not service-area businesses | After Google's account review |
Google states that methods depend on "your business type, public info, region, or business hours", and that you cannot change them. Video recording is now the method most often offered; postcards have become rare.
Video is where most failures happen, because Google checks three things in one take. Its video recording guidelines ask for "an unedited, unique, and complete recording with no breaks", captured live from a mobile device through your Business Profile, at least 30 seconds long.
| Proof | Storefront or hybrid | Service-area business |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Street signs, building number, neighboring businesses | Street signs or landmarks at the business address |
| Existence | Permanent signage with the exact profile name | Professional tools, equipment, branded vehicle |
| Management | Unlock the door, open the register, enter a staff-only area | Unlock the branded van, show a permit or invoice in the profile name |
Plan the route before you press record: start in the street on a sign, pan to the storefront name, walk in and open something only staff can open. Keep it under two or three minutes.
Watch out
Do not film other people's faces, ID cards, bank or tax numbers. Google rejects videos that show sensitive information, and a temporary or handwritten sign rarely counts as proof that the business exists.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Review issues" after a video | Name not visible, no surroundings, no proof of management | Re-record in one take covering all three proofs |
| Postcard never arrives | Address format, missing suite number, mailbox | Correct the address, wait 14 days, then request a new code (one at a time) |
| Get verified button reappears | Google could not fully confirm the business | Retry with the next method offered |
| No more ways to verify | All methods exhausted | Contact Business Profile support with photos of signage, a utility bill and your website |
| Already verified by someone else | Former agency, employee or owner | Request ownership, then claim after 3 days without response |
| Suspended right after verification | Ineligible address or keyword-stuffed name | Fix the name or address to match reality, then request reinstatement |
| Asked to verify again | Change of name, address, category or hours | Make changes one at a time and keep proof ready |
Large brands can skip most of this: Google's bulk verification covers businesses with 10 or more locations, managed in one account. Our guide to local listing management covers how to keep many profiles consistent afterwards.
A verified profile is the base of local visibility on Google, but it is only one source. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for "the best plumber near me", the answer draws on websites, review platforms and directories as well as maps data. Our study of directories in AI answers shows how often listing sites appear among the sources cited.
Two things then matter: pages on your own site that answer local questions clearly, and knowing whether AI assistants name you or a competitor. Sorank is our product: an autopilot SEO and GEO software. Its keyword research finds the local and service queries your customers type, it writes and publishes the articles that answer them, and AI mention tracking checks every week whether ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cite your brand.

To sum up: check eligibility, align your name and address everywhere, then complete the method Google offers in one clean attempt. Once verified, the profile brings calls and visits; the content on your site brings the rest. See Sorank's plans, from $49 per month with a 3-day free trial.
Yes, and most businesses now do. Google offers video recording, live video call, phone or text, email or instant verification depending on the business type, region and public information. You cannot choose the method yourself: the options appear when you click Get verified on the profile.
Phone, text and email codes arrive within minutes. After a video or other evidence is submitted, Google says reviews take up to 5 business days, occasionally longer. Postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days.
Yes, if you serve customers at their location. Set up a service-area business, hide the address from the public profile and define the areas you serve. A home address cannot be shown as a storefront unless you receive customers there during the stated hours.
