In short

account-based marketing (ABM) is a B2B strategy where marketing and sales choose a defined list of high value companies, then run coordinated, personalized campaigns aimed at the people who make the buying decision in each of them. Instead of attracting many leads and filtering them, ABM starts from the accounts you want and builds engagement around them. It works best for complex, high value deals, and it depends on tight alignment between sales and marketing and on metrics measured per account.

Account-based marketing reverses the classic funnel described in the Wikipedia entry on ABM: you first pick the accounts, then decide what to say to them and through which channels. In B2B, purchases are made by a group of people, the buying center, which can include a user, a manager, a technical expert, a purchasing officer and an executive sponsor. ABM addresses all of them.

How does ABM differ from inbound marketing?

CriterionInbound and lead generationAccount-based marketing
Starting pointAttract many prospects, then qualifyChoose target accounts first
Unit of measureIndividual leadsAccounts and buying groups
ContentBroad, for a personaPersonalized for an industry, company or person
ChannelsSEO, social, ads, email to a wide audienceTargeted ads, email, events, direct outreach
Sales roleReceives qualified leadsCo-plans and runs the campaign from the start
Best forMany small or medium dealsFewer, larger and complex deals

The two complement each other: inbound content and search visibility make the brand credible when target accounts start their own research.

What are the types of ABM?

One-to-one

Fully custom programs for a handful of strategic accounts: dedicated content, tailored proposals, executive meetings. High effort, high potential value.

One-to-few

Campaigns for small clusters of similar accounts, for example ten companies in the same industry with the same problem. Content is adapted to the cluster rather than to each company.

One-to-many

Programmatic ABM for hundreds of accounts that match the ideal customer profile, using intent data, targeted ads and light personalization at the industry or role level.

How do you run an ABM program step by step?

1. Define the ideal customer profile

Analyze your best current customers: industry, size, region, technology stack, triggers that led them to buy, revenue and retention. Write the profile that combines high value and good fit.

2. Select and tier the accounts

Build a list with sales, using firmographic data, signals of intent (job postings, funding, product launches, visits to your site) and existing relationships. Split it into tiers: a few strategic accounts for one-to-one, clusters for one-to-few, the rest for one-to-many.

3. Map the buying group

For each account, identify the roles involved in the decision, their priorities and objections. Use LinkedIn, the company's site, press releases and sales conversations.

4. Create personalized content

Personalize where it matters: industry examples, the account's known challenges, a calculator with their numbers, a short audit of their site, a case study from a similar company. Our glossary explains content personalization and its limits.

5. Orchestrate the channels

Combine targeted ads on LinkedIn and display networks, personalized emails, direct outreach by phone (see our guide to phoning), events, webinars and sometimes direct mail. Sales and marketing follow a shared calendar of touches for each account.

6. Align sales and marketing

Agree on target accounts, roles, messages and next steps in weekly or biweekly meetings. Our guide to sales and marketing alignment details the shared definitions and service level agreements that make it work.

7. Measure per account and adjust

Review engagement and pipeline by account every month, move budget toward accounts that respond, and refresh the list each quarter.

What does an ABM campaign look like in practice?

Take a fictional software company selling scheduling tools to hospital groups. Sales and marketing pick 30 hospital groups that match the ideal profile and split them into three clusters by size. For each cluster, marketing writes a short guide on staff scheduling costs in hospitals, a landing page with a savings calculator and LinkedIn ads shown only to employees of those organizations. Sales development representatives call the operations directors who engaged with the content, while account executives invite the IT and finance leads to a demo built on their own data. Every two weeks, both teams review which accounts moved forward and adjust messages for the others.

How do you measure account-based marketing?

StageIndicatorWhat it shows
CoverageContacts identified per target accountWhether the buying group is reached
EngagementVisits, content views, meetings per accountInterest across the buying group
PipelineOpportunities and pipeline value from target accountsCommercial impact
ConversionWin rate and deal size versus non-ABM dealsEffectiveness of the program
ExpansionUpsell and retention of ABM accountsLong term value

Which tools does ABM require?

  • CRM: the single source of truth for accounts, contacts and opportunities; see our comparison of the best CRM software.
  • Data and intent tools: firmographic databases, website visitor identification, third-party intent signals.
  • Ad platforms: LinkedIn Ads and display networks that accept company lists.
  • Marketing automation: personalized email sequences and scoring at account level.
  • Sales engagement: sequences for email, phone and social outreach.

Respect data protection rules when collecting and using contact data, such as the GDPR in Europe, and keep a clear legal basis for every outreach.

Where do SEO and GEO fit in an ABM strategy?

People in target accounts research alone before replying to any outreach. They search on Google for your category and your brand, and they increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to list the best providers for their need. If your site ranks for the problems they face and the AI cite your brand in those answers, every ABM touch lands on a name they already recognize. Practical links between ABM and search:

  • Publish pages for each target industry and use case, which serve both search and personalized outreach.
  • Answer the objections the buying group raises in articles and FAQ pages.
  • Check what the AI say about your brand in your category and correct gaps with clear, sourced content.

What mistakes make ABM fail?

  • Choosing accounts without sales.
  • Personalizing only the first name in an email.
  • Targeting one contact instead of the buying group.
  • Measuring leads instead of account engagement and pipeline.
  • Expecting results in weeks on deals that take months.

Account-based marketing works when sales and marketing pick the right accounts together, speak to the whole buying group with relevant content and measure progress account by account. Frequently asked questions

Is account-based marketing only for large companies?

No. Small B2B companies with high value deals often use a light version: a list of 20 to 50 target accounts, a shared spreadsheet or CRM view, personalized emails and LinkedIn outreach. The method matters more than the tools. What makes ABM worth it is a deal size large enough to justify the extra effort per account.

How long does it take to see results from ABM?

Engagement signals such as visits and meetings can appear within weeks, but revenue follows the length of your sales cycle, often several months to a year for complex B2B deals. Plan at least two or three quarters before judging the program, and track leading indicators per account in the meantime.

What is the difference between ABM and ABS?

ABS, or account-based selling, is the sales side of the same approach: sales teams plan prospecting and deal strategy around target accounts. ABM covers the marketing actions that support it. Most companies treat them as one program, sometimes called account-based experience, with shared accounts, messages and metrics.
