Unlinked brand mentions explained: why they matter for SEO and AI answers, 5 ways to find them, which to prioritize and an email template to ask for the link.

In short
an unlinked brand mention is a page that names your brand, product or founder without linking to your site. It is the easiest link to earn, because the author already chose to cite you: you find the mention, check that it is worth it, and ask politely for a link to the most relevant page. Even when no link follows, the mention counts for GEO, since AI assistants learn what to say about a brand from the text of pages, linked or not.
Want to go further? Ask
Every brand that gets talked about collects mentions without links: a journalist quotes your study, a blogger lists your tool, a forum recommends your service. Each of these unlinked brand mentions is half of a link already earned. This guide explains why they matter for search and for AI answers, how to find them with free tools, which ones to pursue and how to ask for the link without being pushy.
An unlinked brand mention is any reference to your brand on a third-party page that does not include a hyperlink to your site. It can name the company, a product, a proprietary study or method, a slogan or a spokesperson. The tracking of these references is part of brand monitoring.
| Type of mention | Example | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Linked mention (followed) | "according to Brand", with "Brand" linked to the site | Readers, referral traffic, a link signal for Google, text for AI |
| Linked mention (nofollow, sponsored or ugc) | Same, with a link marked nofollow, sponsored or ugc | Readers, referral traffic, text for AI; Google treats the link as a hint |
| Unlinked mention | "according to Brand" in plain text | Readers, branded searches, text for AI; no link to follow |
For the vocabulary of link attributes, see our glossary entries on the nofollow attribute and anchor text.
Links remain one of the signals Google uses to discover pages and judge their importance. Turning a mention into a link, a technique often called link reclamation, is the shortest path to a new backlink: the publisher already knows you, already found you worth citing and only has to add a URL. A mention also brings what a link brings beyond rankings: readers who search your brand name, and context about what your brand does. Our guide on how to get backlinks places this tactic among the others, and our glossary entry on link building covers the basics.
AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity build their answers from text: what models learned during training and what they read when they search the web. A sentence that names your brand as a reference in your category is useful to them whether or not it contains a link. For AI visibility, the mention itself is the asset. The more independent sources describe your brand the same way, the more consistently assistants repeat that description, an idea explained in our glossary entry on entity consensus.
That changes how you treat mentions. A mention that describes your brand inaccurately (an old price, a discontinued product, the wrong category) is worth correcting even if no link is possible. And earning new mentions on the sites assistants cite is a strategy of its own, called LLM seeding. Our glossary explains how AI brand mentions are counted, and our study of which platforms AI assistants cite most shows where mentions carry the most weight.
Search your brand name in quotes and exclude your own site and social profiles: "YourBrand" -site:yourbrand.com -site:linkedin.com -site:facebook.com. Add after:2025 to see recent pages only. Google documents these operators in its help page on refining searches, and our Google search operators cheat sheet lists more combinations. Repeat the search for each product name, your founder's name and the name of any study you published.
Google Alerts emails you when new pages contain a term. Create one alert per brand variant, set it to "as it happens" or daily, and you catch mentions while the author is still easy to reach.
Export the pages that mention you (from the two methods above or a monitoring tool) and the pages that link to you (from Search Console's Links report or a backlink tool such as our free backlink analysis). Pages in the first list and not in the second are your unlinked mentions.
Paid suites such as Semrush and Ahrefs, and dedicated media monitoring tools, scan large indexes of pages and can flag mentions without a link. They save time when your brand is mentioned often.
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity the questions your buyers ask and open the sources they cite. Some will mention you without a link; others will mention your competitors and not you. Both lists are worth acting on.
| Method | Cost | Coverage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search operators | Free | Pages indexed by Google, manual review | A first audit of past mentions |
| Google Alerts | Free | New pages only | Catching fresh mentions quickly |
| Mentions vs backlinks | Free to paid | Depends on the mention source | Finding exactly which mentions lack a link |
| Monitoring tools | Paid | Large index, ongoing | Brands with many mentions |
| AI cited sources | Free | Pages that influence AI answers | Prioritizing for GEO |
Not every mention deserves an email. Score each one on a few criteria:
| Criterion | Pursue | Skip or deprioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | Page about your topic or industry | Passing mention in an unrelated list |
| Page quality | Real audience, organic traffic, maintained site | Thin, spammy or abandoned site |
| Sentiment | Neutral or positive | Negative review or complaint (answer it, do not ask for a link) |
| Freshness | Published recently, author reachable | Old archive page nobody edits |
| Cited by AI | Page appears among AI sources | Not a criterion to skip, but a reason to move a page up |
| Contact | Author or editor identifiable | No contact route |

The same tone works for journalists, who often decide alone whether to add links. Our guide to digital PR covers relations with the press in more depth.
Keep one spreadsheet with the URL, the date of the mention, the contact, the date of the request, the follow-up, the outcome and the attribute of the link obtained. Review it every quarter: you will see which types of sites add links and which never do, and you can stop spending time on the second group.
Unlinked mentions are a sign that your brand is already visible; our guide to brand visibility shows how to measure that visibility on each channel. Reclaiming the links is the quick win; earning more mentions is the long game, for Google and for AI assistants alike.
Sorank helps on both sides. Its AI mention tracking follows 25 to 150 prompts on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini (plus Perplexity and Grok from the Pro plan) and shows whether your brand is cited and who is cited instead. Its backlinks acquisition obtains natural backlinks automatically from its network of 5,000+ users. Plans start at $49 per month on the annual plan, with a 3-day free trial.
Indirectly. Google documents links as a way to discover and evaluate pages, and has not published that an unlinked mention counts as a ranking signal on its own. A mention still brings readers, branded searches and context about your brand, and it is the easiest starting point to earn a link, because the author already chose to talk about you.
Link reclamation is the work of recovering links you should already have: mentions of your brand without a link, links that point to a deleted or moved page on your site, and links that were removed during a site update. It usually brings links faster than prospecting new sites, because the publisher already knows and cites you.
Ask for a link to the most useful page and leave the attribute to the publisher. Many sites mark external links as nofollow by policy, and insisting on a followed link, or offering something in return, turns a simple correction into a negotiation. If any compensation is involved, Google asks for the link to be marked as sponsored.
