A citation gap is every AI answer that cites your competitors but not you. How to measure it prompt by prompt, source by source, and close it.

The citation gap is the AI-era cousin of the keyword gap. In Google, you compared rankings. In ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity there is often no list of ten links to compare, only an answer that names a few brands and cites a few pages. If you are not among them, the gap is binary for that user: you do not exist in their research. Google's own guidance on AI features in Search confirms that these answers link to supporting pages, which is what makes the gap measurable.
It is the difference between how often your competitors are cited by AI and how often you are, for the same questions. It has two layers:
The prompt layer tells you where you are losing. The source layer tells you why, and where to act.
A content gap is about topics you have not written; a citation gap is about answers you are not part of. The two overlap but are not the same. You can have an article on every topic and still be absent from AI answers, because assistants also weigh third-party confirmation. The classic content gap analysis remains useful for Google; the citation gap adds the AI layer on top.
| Criterion | Content gap | Citation gap |
|---|---|---|
| Unit compared | Keywords and topics | Prompts, brand mentions and cited URLs |
| Where it is measured | Google results | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, AI Overviews |
| Typical fix | Write the missing page | Improve your page and earn mentions on cited sources |
| Data source | Ranking tools, Search Console | A repeated panel of prompts |
With a stable prompt panel, several runs and a simple comparison table. The method:
For a quick spot check on a single page, our free LLM citation checker shows whether a URL is being picked up. For the full panel, Sorank's AI mention tracking runs your prompts every week in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini (Perplexity and Grok from the Pro plan) and lists the brands cited in your place.
Start where intent is commercial and the gap repeats across assistants. A question like "best accounting software for freelancers" that names two competitors in three assistants is worth more than an informational question where one assistant names one rival once. A simple priority score multiplies three factors: buying intent of the prompt, number of assistants where the gap appears, and how often the same cited source comes back.
By working on both layers at once: your own page and the sources the AI trusts.
One line per prompt, one column per brand, and a list of sources. A useful report shows, for each prompt, whether you are named, which competitors are, and which URLs were cited. Sorted by commercial value, it becomes an editorial and outreach plan: pages to write or rewrite, and publications to approach.
A citation gap shows exactly where AI assistants recommend your competitors instead of you, and which sources make them do it. Measure it on a stable panel of buyer questions, close the commercial gaps first by improving your pages and earning mentions on cited sources, and track the result every week. Sorank tracks your prompts in the main AI assistants and publishes the content that closes the gaps on autopilot: try it with a 3-day free trial.
A content gap compares the topics or keywords your competitors rank for in Google with yours. A citation gap compares who gets cited or named inside AI answers for the same questions. You can have no content gap and still a large citation gap, when AI assistants prefer third-party sources that mention your competitors.
Between 25 and 100 prompts is a practical range for one market and language. Fewer than 25 gives noisy results, because AI answers vary from one run to the next. Keep the panel stable over time so you compare like with like, and add prompts only when your offer changes.
The ones your buyers use. In most markets that means ChatGPT and Google's AI features first, then Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Each assistant cites different sources, so a gap closed in one can stay open in another; measure them separately rather than averaging them.
