In short

homepage SEO is the work of making your home page rank for your brand and your main category, explain clearly who you are and what you offer, and pass authority to the pages that sell. That means a descriptive title tag (never just "Home"), one H1 that states your offer, enough crawlable text to describe your business, links to your key pages, Organization and WebSite structured data, and a fast hero section. The homepage should not try to rank for every keyword: each important topic deserves its own page.

The home page is usually the page with the most backlinks and the most direct visits, and it is the page Google and AI assistants read to understand what your business is. Yet many home pages are a slider, a slogan and a menu. Google's own documentation on title links warns against vague titles such as "Home" for a home page. This guide covers homepage SEO block by block: keywords, title and H1, content, internal links, structured data, speed, frequent mistakes and how the homepage shapes the way AI assistants describe your brand.

What is the role of the homepage in SEO?

The homepage has three jobs that no other page can do as well:

  • Rank for brand searches: people who type your name must land on a page that confirms they are in the right place. What appears for that search is your brand SERP.
  • Distribute authority: because it receives the most links, the homepage is the best place to link to the pages that sell. Pages linked from the homepage are also found and crawled faster.
  • Define the entity: it tells search engines and AI assistants who you are, what you do, for whom and where, in words they can quote.

It also ranks for one or two generic terms in your category, especially for smaller sites. It should not try to rank for everything: a homepage targeting 20 keywords ranks for none, and competes with your own service pages.

Which keywords should a homepage target?

Target your brand name plus one main category term, the one that describes your business in the words customers use. Keep everything else for dedicated pages.

PageKeywords to targetExample (accounting firm in Lyon)
HomepageBrand + main category (+ location if local)Martin and Co, accounting firm in Lyon
Service pagesOne service eachPayroll outsourcing in Lyon
Landing pagesOne offer or campaignCompany creation package
Blog articlesInformational questionsHow to choose a legal status

If your homepage ranks for a query that a service page should own, link from the homepage to that service page with a descriptive anchor rather than adding more text about the service on the home page.

How should you write the homepage title tag and H1?

The title tag is the strongest on-page signal and the text people see in results. Google's title link documentation says the home page title is a reasonable place to include some additional information about your site, and gives the pattern "ExampleSocialSite, a place for people to meet and mingle". Practical rules:

  • Brand plus offer: "Martin and Co: Accounting Firm in Lyon for Small Businesses".
  • Specific, not generic: avoid "Home", "Welcome" or a slogan alone.
  • Short enough to read in full: Google truncates long titles to fit the screen; around 50 to 60 characters is a common target.

The H1 states the offer in plain words. A slogan can sit above or below it, but the H1 itself should say what you do: "Accounting for small businesses in Lyon" tells Google and visitors more than "Your numbers, our passion". Use one H1, then H2s for each block.

What content should a homepage have?

A homepage needs enough crawlable text to answer four questions: what you offer, for whom, why you rather than another, and what to do next. There is no minimum word count in Google's guidelines, but a page with only images and a slogan gives nothing to rank or quote. The blocks below cover both search and conversion.

BlockSEO roleConversion role
Hero: H1, one-sentence value proposition, main call to actionStates the main keyword and the entityTells visitors in seconds if they are in the right place
Proof: client logos, rating with count and date, figuresTrust signals, quotable factsReduces doubt
Offers: one card per service or product, linkedInternal links to the pages that sellLets visitors choose their path
How it works: 3 to 5 stepsDescriptive text with secondary termsMakes the purchase concrete
About: founder or team, credentials, locationExpertise and identity of the entityPuts a face on the business
FAQ: real objections and questionsAnswers that search engines and AI assistants can quoteRemoves the last objections
Footer: address, contact, legal pages, social profilesConsistent business details, links to key pagesReassures and offers contact

The same logic applies to dedicated pages; our guide to the landing page details blocks for single-offer pages.

Treat homepage links as your most valuable internal linking:

  1. Main navigation: a few clear entries pointing to service or category pages, labeled with the words customers search.
  2. Contextual links in the blocks: each offer card links to its page, with a descriptive anchor ("payroll outsourcing" rather than "learn more").
  3. Footer: about, contact, legal pages and key categories.

Avoid linking to dozens of minor pages: the more links, the less weight each one carries. Our free on-page SEO audit lists the links, headings and tags of any URL so you can check what your homepage really says.

Which structured data belongs on the homepage?

Two types of schema markup matter most on the home page:

  • Organization (or a more specific subtype such as LocalBusiness or OnlineStore): Google's Organization structured data documentation says that adding it to your home page can help Google understand your organization's administrative details and disambiguate it in search results, and recommends placing it on the home page or an about page. Include name, logo, URL, contact details and sameAs links to your official profiles.
  • WebSite: according to Google's documentation on site names, adding WebSite structured data to your home page is the main way to indicate the site name you want Google to show.

Our free schema generator produces valid JSON-LD for both. Consistent organization data also feeds the knowledge panel that can appear for your brand.

How fast should a homepage be?

The homepage is often the first page a visitor loads, so its speed shapes first impressions. Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds, published on web.dev, are: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads. On a homepage, the largest element is usually the hero image or video: compress it, size it correctly, and avoid autoplay videos and heavy sliders above the fold. Our guide to UX and SEO explains how experience and rankings interact.

What are the most common homepage SEO mistakes?

  • A title that says "Home" or only the brand name, with no offer.
  • Text in images: a value proposition in a banner image is invisible to search engines and screen readers.
  • Content loaded only by JavaScript after a click or a delay, which search engines may not see.
  • A carousel as the hero: slides rotate before visitors read them, and only the first one is usually seen.
  • Every keyword on one page, competing with service pages that should rank instead.
  • Several versions of the homepage (with and without www, /index.html, http) without redirects to one URL.
  • No contact details or proof, which weakens trust for visitors and for Google.

How does the homepage shape your visibility in AI answers?

When ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity describe a company, they rely on what they find about it: its own site, starting with the homepage and about page, and what other sites say. A homepage that states clearly what you do, for whom, where and since when, in the same words as your profiles and directory listings, gives them a consistent description to repeat. A vague slogan forces them to guess or to use a competitor's wording.

To strengthen that, keep one short description of the business and reuse it across the homepage, Organization schema, social profiles and listings; add an FAQ that answers the questions customers ask AI assistants; and publish dedicated pages for each offer so the AI can cite the right one. Sorank's GEO optimization covers these on-page elements across the whole site, not only the homepage. Follow-up reading: our list of SEO best practices and our guide to search engine visibility.

Homepage SEO: the checklist to remember

A good homepage ranks for your brand, explains your offer in words customers and AI assistants can repeat, and sends visitors and authority to the pages that sell. Write a descriptive title and H1, keep enough text to define the business, link to your key pages, add Organization and WebSite schema, and keep the hero fast. Then let dedicated pages and articles capture the rest of your keywords: that is what Sorank does on autopilot, with keyword research, articles and internal links to your key pages, and a 3-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

Should the homepage target the main keyword of the business?

Yes, alongside the brand name. The homepage usually has the most authority on the site, so it is well placed to rank for the main category term, such as accounting firm in Lyon. Specific services and questions should have their own pages, linked from the homepage, so they do not compete with each other.

How many words should a homepage have?

Google sets no minimum word count. The homepage needs enough crawlable text to explain what you offer, for whom, why choose you and what to do next, which often takes a few hundred words spread across blocks. A page made only of images and a slogan gives search engines and AI assistants too little to understand or quote.

Does changing the homepage affect SEO?

It can. Changing the title, the H1, the main text or the links on the homepage changes the signals for brand and category searches and the internal links to key pages. Before a redesign, record the current title, headings, links and rankings, keep the same URL, and compare positions in Search Console in the weeks after launch.
