What Majestic SEO measures (Fresh and Historic index, Trust Flow, Citation Flow, Topical Trust Flow), how to read the metrics, use cases, limits and prices.

In short
Majestic is a backlink analysis tool built on its own crawl of the web. It shows which sites link to a domain or page, with two indexes (Fresh, links seen in the last 120 days, and Historic, links seen since 2006) and its own metrics: Trust Flow (quality of linking sites), Citation Flow (volume of link influence) and Topical Trust Flow (the themes of those links). It is useful for link audits, prospecting and competitor comparison, as long as you remember that these are third-party scores, not Google metrics.

Majestic SEO specialises in one thing: links. It does not track rankings or audit pages like the large suites; it maps the link graph of the web and scores it. Plans start at €46.99 per month for Lite, €94.99 for Pro and €379.99 for API access, with discounts on yearly billing, according to the Majestic pricing page (checked October 2026).
| Metric | What it means | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Trust Flow (TF) | Score from 0 to 100 based on how close a site is, in links, to a set of trusted seed sites | Higher means links from more reliable sources |
| Citation Flow (CF) | Score from 0 to 100 reflecting the volume of link influence, regardless of quality | Higher means more link power, good or bad |
| Topical Trust Flow | Trust Flow broken down by topic categories (for example Business, Health, Computers) | Shows whether links come from your theme |
| Referring domains | Number of distinct domains linking to the target | Often more telling than the raw number of links |
| Backlinks | Total number of links found | Can be inflated by sitewide links |
| Fresh / Historic index | Links seen in the last 120 days / all links seen since 2006 | Fresh for current state, Historic for history and lost links |
The ratio between the two is more useful than either number alone. A balanced profile has a Trust Flow close to its Citation Flow: the site receives links that are both numerous and trustworthy. A Citation Flow far above the Trust Flow suggests many links of low quality, which is common on sites that bought links or were spammed. A Trust Flow close to or above the Citation Flow suggests few but solid links. Compare sites of the same type and sector: a local bakery and a national newspaper do not play in the same range.
List referring domains, sort them by Trust Flow and Topical Trust Flow, and look for clusters of off-topic, low-trust domains, exact-match anchors repeated across many sites or sudden spikes in the Fresh index. These patterns deserve a closer look. Our guide to toxic backlinks explains what to do next, and Google's spam policies define what link spam is.
Look at the referring domains of competitors who rank above you, filter by topic and Trust Flow, and keep the sites that are relevant to your field. Those are your best link building targets: they already link to your subject.
Majestic's comparison view puts several domains side by side (TF, CF, referring domains, link history). It quickly shows whether a competitor's lead comes from content or from a much stronger link profile.
Before a guest article, a sponsorship or the purchase of an expired domain, check its link history in the Historic index and its topical profile. A domain whose links all come from an unrelated theme brings little to your site.
Lite suits a site owner who checks their own domain and a few competitors from time to time. Pro suits consultants and teams who audit several sites, need more historical data and run larger exports. API is for tools and agencies that pull Majestic data into their own software. If you only need occasional checks, start with the shortest commitment and upgrade when the limits block you.
| Tool | Main authority metric | Scale | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Majestic | Trust Flow and Citation Flow | 0 - 100 | Link-focused, topical breakdown, long link history |
| Ahrefs | Domain Rating (DR) | 0 - 100 | Large index, full SEO suite (keywords, audits, rankings) |
| Moz | Domain Authority (DA) | 1 - 100 | Widely known metric, keyword and local tools |
| Google Search Console | No score | None | Free, first-party list of top linking sites |
These scores are not interchangeable: a site can have a DR of 50 and a TF of 20. Our article on domain authority explains how these metrics are built, and the free domain authority checker gives a quick estimate for any site.
Indirectly. AI assistants do not read Trust Flow, but they rely on the same reality it tries to measure: being mentioned by trusted, relevant sources. A brand cited by respected industry sites, reviews and media is more likely to appear in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity answers. Use Majestic to find where your field's authoritative sources are, then aim to be mentioned there, with or without a link.
Majestic is a precise instrument for understanding a link profile, as long as you read Trust Flow, Citation Flow and topics together and treat them as estimates. To grow that profile without manual outreach, Sorank obtains natural backlinks automatically from its network of 5,000+ users, alongside optimized articles published on autopilot.
There is no universal threshold, because Trust Flow depends on the size and sector of a site. Compare a site with others of the same type: for a small business site, a Trust Flow in the teens can be healthy, while large media sites score much higher. The balance with Citation Flow and the topical relevance of the links matter more than the number itself.
Majestic offers some free tools and limited lookups after sign-up, but full access requires a paid plan: Lite, Pro or API, billed monthly or yearly. The Lite plan covers basic link research, while Pro adds deeper data and more reports. Check the current limits on Majestic's pricing page before subscribing.
No. Trust Flow and Citation Flow are proprietary metrics created by Majestic to estimate link quality and volume. Google uses its own systems to evaluate links and has never used third-party scores. They remain useful to compare sites and spot unusual link profiles, as long as they are not treated as ranking factors.
