Verified Google search statistics for 2026: market share, yearly searches, new queries, zero-click, AI Overviews and AI Mode users, each with its source.

In short
Google held 89.94% of the worldwide search market in September 2026 (StatCounter, 2026) and handles more than 5 trillion searches a year (Google, 2025). About 15% of daily queries are new (Google, 2019, confirmed in 2025). Around 6 in 10 searches end without a click to another website (SparkToro, 2024), and AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion monthly users (Google, 2026), which lowers clicks on classic results when a summary appears (Pew Research Center, 2025).

Most "Google statistics" pages online mix old estimates, invented figures and numbers without sources. This page lists only Google search statistics we could trace to a named source, with the year of publication. Market share comes from StatCounter Global Stats; usage figures come from Google and Alphabet; click behavior comes from public studies. All figures were checked in October 2026.
StatCounter measures the share of page views referred by each search engine across the websites using its tracking code. It is the most cited public measure, but it measures referrals, not the number of searches.
| Search engine | All devices | Desktop | Mobile |
|---|---|---|---|
| 89.94% | 78.12% | 95.68% | |
| Bing | 5.29% | 14.62% | 0.69% |
| Yahoo! | 1.36% | 3.35% | 0.45% |
| Yandex | 1.30% | 1.51% | 1.21% |
| DuckDuckGo | 0.74% | 0.94% | 0.64% |
| Baidu | 0.44% | 0.37% | 0.48% |

Two lessons. Google's dominance is near total on mobile, while on desktop Bing keeps a real share, largely because it is the default engine in Windows and Edge. And mobile matters more than desktop overall: in September 2026, mobile devices generated 58.99% of worldwide web traffic, desktop 39.26% and tablets 1.76% (StatCounter, 2026). Google rarely publishes volume figures. The two official data points are ten years apart.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Searches per year | More than 5 trillion | Google, 2025 |
| Searches per year (previous figure) | More than 2 trillion | Google, 2016 |
| Share of daily queries never seen before | About 15% | Google, 2019 (BERT announcement); repeated by Google's John Mueller in 2025 |
Dividing 5 trillion by 365 gives roughly 14 billion searches a day. That is a calculation, not a figure published by Google. The 15% of new queries is the more useful number for content strategy: a large share of demand is long, specific or new, and no keyword tool can list it in advance. Individual keyword data, the search volume, is always an estimate built from samples.
A zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking on a result that leads to another website: the answer was on the results page, the user refined the query, or left.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google searches with zero clicks, United States | 58.5% | SparkToro and Datos, 2024 |
| Google searches with zero clicks, European Union | 59.7% | SparkToro and Datos, 2024 |
| Clicks to the open web per 1,000 searches, United States | 374 | SparkToro and Datos, 2024 |
| Clicks to the open web per 1,000 searches, European Union | 360 | SparkToro and Datos, 2024 |
The study used clickstream panel data collected between 2022 and 2024, before AI Overviews were widely deployed. It shows that a majority of searches already ended on Google before generative answers arrived.
Google's AI Overviews place a generated summary above the results. Several independent measurements now exist.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Visits with a click on a classic result, page with an AI summary | 8% | Pew Research Center, 2025 |
| Same, page without an AI summary | 15% | Pew Research Center, 2025 |
| Visits with a click on a link inside the AI summary | 1% | Pew Research Center, 2025 |
| Visits that end the browsing session, with vs without AI summary | 26% vs 16% | Pew Research Center, 2025 |
| Share of searches in the panel that showed an AI summary | 18% | Pew Research Center, 2025 |
| Drop in click-through rate of the top result when an AI Overview appears | 34.5% lower | Ahrefs, 2025 |
| Same measurement, updated with December 2025 data | 58% lower | Ahrefs, 2026 |
The Pew Research Center study analyzed the browsing of 900 adults in the United States in March 2025, covering 68,879 Google searches. Ahrefs compared informational keywords with and without an AI Overview: the result is a correlation, and branded queries can behave differently.
These figures are self-reported by Google and Alphabet, mostly during earnings calls and the I/O conference.
| Feature | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overviews, monthly users | More than 1.5 billion | Alphabet, Q1 2025 earnings |
| AI Overviews, monthly users | More than 2 billion, in more than 200 countries and territories | Alphabet, Q2 2025 earnings |
| AI Overviews, monthly active users | More than 2.5 billion | Google I/O, 2026 |
| AI Mode, monthly active users | More than 1 billion | Alphabet, Q2 2026 earnings |
| Gemini app, monthly active users | 950 million | Alphabet, Q2 2026 earnings |
| Search and other revenue growth, year over year | 17% | Alphabet, Q2 2026 earnings |
In its I/O 2026 keynote, Google presented Search as the product that brings generative AI to more people than any other. Alphabet also says AI Overviews and AI Mode drive an increase in total queries. Google search volume keeps growing while its results page changes, and more answers are given before the click.
Sorank, our software, works in autopilot on both sides: it finds the queries your site can rank for, publishes optimized articles built to be cited, and tracks whether ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini mention your brand. See how it works on the Sorank home page.
Google still dominates search, but more answers now stay on the results page: the winning sites are those that rank and get cited at the same time.
According to StatCounter, Google accounted for 89.94% of worldwide search engine referrals in September 2026, across all devices. Its share reaches 95.68% on mobile and 78.12% on desktop, where Bing holds 14.62%. StatCounter measures referred page views, not the raw number of searches.
Google said in 2025 that it handles more than 5 trillion searches per year. Divided by 365, that is roughly 14 billion searches per day, a calculation rather than an official daily figure. Google does not publish a daily count.
Public data does not show a decline in Google's search volume. Alphabet reported in 2026 that AI Overviews and AI Mode are driving an increase in total queries, and that Search revenue grew 17% year over year in the second quarter. What declines is the share of searches that lead to a click on a website.
