Google AI Mode SEO: how AI Mode picks its sources with query fan-out, what Google says to do, and 7 steps to get your pages cited and measure the results.

In short
Google AI Mode is the conversational search tab where Gemini writes a full answer with links to its sources. To appear there, a page must first be indexed and eligible for a snippet, as in classic SEO. What makes the difference is coverage of the sub-questions AI Mode searches behind each query (the query fan-out), clear passages that answer them, and a brand that other sites mention. Clicks from AI Mode are counted in Search Console with your usual web traffic.

Google AI Mode SEO became a real topic on May 20, 2025, when Google opened AI Mode to everyone in the United States after a test in Labs, before extending it to many more countries and languages. Unlike AI Overviews, which add a summary above the classic results, AI Mode replaces the list of ten links with a written answer, follow-up questions and a panel of sources. This guide explains how the system picks those sources and what you can do to be one of them.
AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search and in the Google app, powered by a custom version of Gemini. The user asks a long question, often with several constraints, gets a structured answer (paragraphs, lists, sometimes tables) with links next to each part, and can keep the conversation going with follow-up questions. Our glossary entry on AI Mode sums up the vocabulary.
For a website, the change is the format of visibility: a page earns a citation inside the answer. A page appears as a source card or an inline link inside the answer, next to three to ten other sources. The table below compares it with classic results and with AI Overviews.
| Criterion | Classic results | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format | List of links | Summary above the list | Full written answer, conversation |
| Trigger | Every query | Some queries, chosen by Google | The user opens the AI Mode tab |
| Queries run | One | A few | Many sub-queries (fan-out) |
| Your visibility | Position | Link in the summary | Citation next to a passage |
| Reporting | Search Console | Search Console (Web) | Search Console (Web) |
Google describes the core mechanism in its announcement: AI Mode works by breaking the question into subtopics and issuing many queries at once on the user's behalf, then assembles the answer from what it finds. This is the query fan-out. A question such as "which CRM for a five-person sales team using Gmail, under 50 dollars per user" can trigger searches on CRM comparisons, Gmail integrations, pricing pages and reviews, each with its own results.
Three consequences follow for SEO:
Note
According to Google's documentation, there is no special markup, file or tag to appear in AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search, and Google adds that indexing and serving are never guaranteed.
Google's guide AI features and your website applies to both AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its message is that the usual SEO best practices remain the way in: let Google crawl your pages (robots.txt, CDN, hosting), link to important pages internally, offer a good page experience, keep the important content in text, support it with quality images and videos, keep structured data consistent with the visible text, and keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date. It also states that you do not need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear.
To control what is shown, the same snippet rules apply: nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit how your content is used in these features, at the cost of visibility. Most sites should leave them off on pages they want cited.
Open the Page indexing report in Search Console and fix the pages that matter: a page that is not indexed cannot be cited. Our guide to Google indexing lists the common causes.
For each important query, list the questions AI Mode is likely to run: comparisons, prices, limits, alternatives, use cases, "for whom". Sorank's query fan-out keyword research generates these sub-queries automatically from your keywords.
Use question headings and open each section with a direct answer of two to four sentences that makes sense without the rest of the page. AI Mode cites passages, and a passage that depends on the paragraph before it is hard to quote.
One page per sub-topic, linked together by internal links, gives AI Mode several pages to pick from. The topical cluster generator helps plan these groups of pages.
Figures with their source, prices, tables, original data, screenshots and real examples are what an answer needs to be precise. The GEO research paper (KDD 2024) found that adding statistics, quotations and citations increases a source's visibility in generative answers by up to 40%.
AI Mode reads reviews, comparisons and forums as well as your site. Being listed in the comparison articles that rank for your category is often what moves a brand from absent to cited.
Questions about prices, tools or rules call for recent sources. Update dates, figures and screenshots on a schedule (see our guide to content refresh).
Tip
Run your main question in AI Mode, open the source panel and note which pages are cited. Read them: they show the format, depth and type of site AI Mode trusts for that question, and the sub-question you may be missing.
Google counts clicks and impressions from AI Mode in the Search Console Performance report, inside the Web search type, mixed with the rest of your organic traffic. You cannot isolate them there, so measurement relies on two complements:
| Method | What it shows | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console | Total clicks and impressions, including AI Mode | No separate AI Mode filter |
| Manual checks | Which sources are cited for a question | Answers vary from one run to the next |
| Prompt tracking | Mention rate across a panel of questions, over time | Requires a fixed list of prompts |
Sorank tracks how Google's AI answers treat your brand with its AI Overview tracker, and follows the same questions in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with AI mention tracking. Gemini powers AI Mode, so our Gemini citation study and the guide on how to rank in Gemini are useful complements.
Watch out
Do not judge your AI Mode visibility on a single search from your own browser. Answers change with the wording, the location and the conversation history; only a repeated panel of questions gives a reliable trend.
Sorank is SEO and GEO software that runs on autopilot. It finds your keywords and their sub-questions automatically, then the article generator writes and publishes answer-first articles with question headings, tables, sources and internal links, the format AI Mode quotes. It also obtains natural backlinks automatically and tracks your brand in AI answers. To see the bigger picture, read GEO vs SEO and how to optimize content for AI search.
The bottom line: AI Mode rewards sites that answer every sub-question of a topic clearly and that other sites talk about, on top of solid classic SEO. You can start with the Sorank plans, with a 3-day free trial.
AI Mode launched for everyone in the United States on May 20, 2025, and Google has since extended it to many more countries and languages. Availability changes often, so check Google's Search help pages for the current list in your market.
Google applies the same controls as for snippets: the nosnippet rule, data-nosnippet on parts of a page and max-snippet limit how your content is shown in AI features. Blocking Googlebot would remove you from Search entirely. Limiting snippets also reduces your visibility, so use these rules only on content you really want to keep out.
No. AI Mode searches many sub-queries and cites the passages that answer each part of the question best. A top-ranking page often helps, but a page with a clearer answer to one sub-question, or a third-party comparison, can be cited instead.
