A SERP API returns Google results as JSON for rank tracking, research and AI Overview monitoring. How it works, use cases, legal limits and how to choose.

In short
a SERP API is a paid web service that runs a search on Google (or Bing, YouTube, Amazon) for you and returns the results page as structured data, usually JSON: organic positions, URLs, titles, ads, featured snippets, People Also Ask, local pack and, with some providers, AI Overviews. It is used for rank tracking, competitor analysis, research and internal SEO tools. Google offers no official API for its web results, so these services are third parties, priced per request, with legal risks that you should understand before building on them.

A SERP API saves you from maintaining your own scraper: the provider handles proxies, locations, devices, captchas and parsing, and you receive clean fields. This guide explains how it works and how to choose; for a ranked comparison of tools, see our review of the best tools for Google scraping.
| Field returned | Content | Typical SEO use |
|---|---|---|
| Organic results | Position, URL, title, snippet, domain | Rank tracking, competitor lists |
| Ads | Advertiser, position, text, display URL | Paid competition on a keyword |
| Featured snippet | Source URL, extracted text or list | Position zero opportunities |
| People Also Ask | Questions and source pages | FAQ ideas, content briefs |
| Local pack | Business names, ratings, addresses | Local SEO monitoring |
| AI Overview | Generated text and cited sources | Checking whether your pages are cited |
| Related searches, knowledge panel, videos, shopping | Other SERP features | Mapping what occupies the page |
The market includes specialists of search data and large proxy and web data companies. Among the best known: SerpApi (many engines, real-time JSON), DataForSEO (SEO-oriented data with real-time and cheaper queued modes), Bright Data and Oxylabs (proxy networks with dedicated SERP scraping products), and Zenserp or similar lighter services. Large SEO suites such as Semrush or Ahrefs also expose search data through their own APIs, but within their plans and data models. Prices change often and depend on volume, speed and features, so compare them on the providers' current pricing pages rather than on a figure quoted in an article.
| Criterion | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Price per 1,000 requests | Real-time vs queued, cost of extra pages, minimum commitment | Rank tracking multiplies keywords x locations x devices x days |
| Location accuracy | Country, city, postal code or GPS coordinates | Local results change from one district to the next |
| Devices and engines | Desktop and mobile, Google, Bing, YouTube, marketplaces | Mobile and desktop rankings differ; Bing feeds Copilot |
| SERP feature coverage | Which blocks are parsed, and how fast new ones are supported | A tool that ignores AI Overviews misses a large part of the page |
| AI Overview parsing | Full text, cited sources, handling of answers that load after the page | Essential if you track AI visibility |
| Latency and reliability | Response time, success rate, uptime commitments | Matters for live tools and agents |
| Depth | Number of results per request (Google now shows about 10 organic results per page) | Tracking beyond page 1 costs more requests |
| Documentation and support | Libraries, examples, change logs | Google changes its layout often; parsers must follow |
Start with a test on 50 to 100 of your own keywords: compare positions with Google Search Console averages and with a manual check in a private window set to the right location.
The question has no single answer, and it has become more pressing. Google's Terms of Service forbid accessing its services through automated means other than the interfaces it provides, and in December 2025 Google sued SerpApi in a US federal court, accusing it of bypassing its anti-scraping protections. As a client, the main risk sits with the provider, but you depend on its continuity. Three precautions:
Only partly. The Custom Search JSON API searches a Programmable Search Engine, not the real Google results page: rankings, ads and SERP features differ, and quotas are low. Google has also closed it to new customers and announced its discontinuation on January 1, 2027 (checked October 2026), pointing to Vertex AI Search, which searches a limited set of sites. For your own site, the Search Console API remains the reliable official source of clicks, impressions and average positions.
A SERP API tells you what Google shows; it does not tell you what ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity answer to the same question. Since the AI build their answers from search results and their own retrieval, the two views complement each other: SERP data to track rankings and AI Overviews, prompt tracking to see whether assistants cite your brand. Sorank tracks your presence in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini on autopilot and writes the content that helps you appear in both.
A SERP API turns Google results into data you can track at scale; choose it on location accuracy, feature coverage including AI Overviews, and real cost per keyword tracked. Then cross-check its numbers with Search Console before making decisions.
Most providers offer a free tier or a trial, usually limited to a few hundred searches per month, enough to test but not to track rankings at scale. Google's own Custom Search JSON API had a small free quota but does not return the real results page, is closed to new customers and is scheduled to stop in January 2027.
Web scraping means writing and maintaining your own code to load and parse pages, including proxies, captchas and layout changes. A SERP API is a managed service that does all of this for you and returns structured fields for each result. You pay per request instead of maintaining infrastructure.
Several providers now parse AI Overviews, returning the generated text and the cited sources when the summary appears. Coverage varies: some answers load after the page, and AI Overviews only show on part of the queries. Test a sample of your keywords and check the results manually before relying on them.
