What Claude skills are, how they work in Claude Code and Claude apps, which SEO and GEO tasks they automate, and how to install a free open-source SEO skill pack.

In short
a Claude skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file of instructions, plus optional scripts and references, that Claude loads only when a task needs it. For SEO, skills turn general advice into repeatable methods: a site audit checklist, an article template, a schema generator, a keyword mapping process. You can write your own or install an existing pack, such as the free, open-source Claude SEO GEO repository published by Sorank, then ask Claude in plain language to run an audit or write a page.

Large language models know a lot about SEO, but they apply it inconsistently from one conversation to the next. Claude SEO skills solve that by packaging a method once and reusing it every time. Anthropic describes the format in its documentation on Agent Skills.
A skill is a directory with at least one file, SKILL.md. Its header gives a name and a short description; its body contains the instructions. Claude reads only the descriptions at the start and loads a full skill when your request matches it, which keeps the context light even with many skills installed. A skill can also include:
Skills work in Claude Code (the terminal agent), in the Claude apps where skills are enabled, and through the API. The format is open, and other agents that read instructions from disk can use the same files.
| Task | What the skill brings | Human check |
|---|---|---|
| Technical audit | A fixed checklist: indexing, canonicals, speed, AI crawler access | Prioritize the fixes |
| Keyword research and mapping | One keyword per page, intent, cannibalization check | Validate business value |
| Article writing | An answer-first structure, FAQ, sources, internal links | Facts and expertise |
| Product and category pages | Templates for descriptions, filters and bottom text | Brand tone |
| Structured data | Ready JSON-LD for Article, Product, LocalBusiness, FAQ | Test in the Rich Results Test |
| Internal linking | Rules for anchors and hub pages | Site structure decisions |
| GEO and AI visibility | Prompt lists, citable passages, entity consistency | Measure over time |
Skills live in a skills folder, either for your user account (available in every project) or inside a project (shared with your team through the repository). You can copy folders there by hand, or install a pack published as a plugin. For example, the open-source Claude SEO GEO repository, maintained by the Sorank team, installs with two commands in Claude Code: add the marketplace, then install the plugin. Read any third-party skill before installing it, especially if it contains scripts: a skill runs with the permissions you give Claude.
Transparency: this repository is published by Sorank. It is free and open source. It contains 19 skills covering the main SEO and GEO jobs: site audit, technical SEO, keyword research, blog articles, product, service, category and comparison pages, schema markup, internal linking, local SEO, backlinks, traffic drop diagnosis, AI visibility and tracking, and social amplification, plus a skill to build an Obsidian knowledge vault that the others read before acting. Each skill is plain markdown, so you can read, adapt or remove any part of it.
A skill tells Claude how to do a task; an MCP server gives Claude access to tools and data. The two combine well: a skill describes your audit method, and an MCP connection supplies Search Console data or publishes the article to your CMS. Sorank offers an MCP server that lets Claude read your Search Console, AI traffic and AI visibility data and manage your articles. If you prefer not to run anything yourself, the Sorank software applies the same methods on autopilot. Our guide to SEO automation with Claude Code shows a complete workflow.
Claude SEO skills turn good SEO and GEO methods into repeatable instructions that Claude applies the same way every time. Install a pack, adapt it to your rules, connect your data, and keep a human check on facts. To go further, explore agentic workflows or let Sorank run the full cycle for you, with a 3-day free trial.
No. Custom instructions and project knowledge are always loaded in a conversation. A skill is loaded only when a request matches its description, and it can bundle scripts and reference files. This lets you install many specialized SEO skills without filling the context with instructions you do not need for the current task.
Skills are supported in Claude Code, in Claude apps where skills are enabled, and through the API. The format is open plain markdown, so agents such as Cursor, Codex or Gemini CLI that read instructions from disk can also use the same files, sometimes with small adjustments.
It is safe if you read them first. A skill can include scripts that Claude may run with the permissions you grant, so review the files, prefer maintained repositories with a clear license, and keep approval prompts enabled for commands that modify files or publish content.
