Black Friday marketing for 2026: key dates, a week-by-week plan, a permanent SEO page, email and ads, EU price display rules and how to measure the results.

In short
Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday on November 30, 2026. A good Black Friday marketing plan starts in September: a permanent Black Friday page on a fixed URL that ranks year after year, an email list warmed up weeks in advance, ad budgets planned for rising costs, offers chosen for margin rather than for the biggest percentage, and price displays that respect the law (in the EU, a reduction must be calculated from the lowest price of the previous 30 days). Then measure profit, not only revenue.

Black Friday marketing is a contest for attention during the busiest shopping days of the year. In the United States, Adobe Analytics measured $11.8 billion of online spending on Black Friday 2025 (up 9.1% year over year) and $14.25 billion on Cyber Monday, the largest online shopping day ever recorded, with $44.2 billion over the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday. The stores that win are rarely those with the deepest discount; they are the ones that prepared their pages, their lists and their offers early.
| Date | Event | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| September | Preparation | Choose offers, update the Black Friday page, plan budgets and stock |
| October | Warm-up | Grow the email and SMS lists, publish buying guides, test ads |
| Early to mid November | Early access | Preview offers for subscribers, early deals for loyal customers |
| Thursday, November 26, 2026 | Thanksgiving (US) | Offers go live in many stores |
| Friday, November 27, 2026 | Black Friday | Peak of traffic and ads competition |
| Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 | Weekend | Reminders, bundles, best sellers |
| Monday, November 30, 2026 | Cyber Monday | Last strong online day, "last chance" messages |
| December | Gift season | Shipping deadlines, gift cards, retention of new customers |
The season is no longer a single day. Adobe noted in its 2025 recap that "Black Friday now challenges the dominance of Cyber Monday" because deals start earlier, and the National Retail Federation counted a record 202.9 million shoppers over the 2025 Thanksgiving weekend in the US, 134.9 million of them online. Organic search is the channel that costs nothing extra on the day, but it cannot be switched on in November: a page needs weeks to be crawled, indexed and ranked.
Create /black-friday once and reuse it every year, instead of a new /black-friday-2026 each time. The page keeps its links, its history and its rankings; you update the content and the year in the title. Outside the season, keep it live with a short text ("Our Black Friday offers return in November, join the list to get early access") and a signup form, rather than deleting it.
Publish the new version in October with the dates, the categories concerned and the signup form, then add the offers when they go live. Link it from the main menu or the home page during the season so Google recrawls it quickly.
Shoppers search "black friday [category]", "[brand] black friday", "best [product] deals" and gift guides. Category pages and buying guides published in October catch these queries; our guide to evergreen content explains how to make them last beyond the season.
Speed under load, out-of-stock handling (keep the product page live with alternatives rather than a 404), and structured data with the current price. If you sell through Google Shopping, submit the reduced price with the sale_price attribute and its effective dates in Merchant Center.
| Channel | Role during Black Friday | Preparation | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highest return: early access, launch, reminders, last chance | Grow and clean the list in October, warm up the sending domain | Too many sends, deliverability drops | |
| SMS | Short alerts at launch and last hours | Explicit consent collected in advance | Legal consent rules, fatigue |
| Search and Shopping ads | Capture buyers searching for your products and brand | Feed with sale prices, budgets increased in advance | Rising costs per click |
| Social ads | Reach and retargeting of visitors and lists | Audiences built in October, creatives ready | Ad fatigue, high auction prices |
| Organic search | Free traffic on the Black Friday page and guides | Page updated in October | Starting too late |
| Website | Conversion: banner, countdown, clear offers | Load tests, simplified checkout | Slow pages, broken discount codes |
A typical email sequence: a teaser one or two weeks before, early access for subscribers, the launch, a reminder on Saturday, a Cyber Monday email and a "last hours" email. Our guide to email marketing covers segmentation and deliverability. For ads, our guide to Google Shopping ads details the feed, and the ROAS calculator tells you the minimum return each campaign needs to stay profitable after discounts.
Calculate the margin after discount, advertising and shipping for each offer. A sale that doubles revenue at a loss is not a success. Our guide to ecommerce marketing places these offers in an annual plan.
Since May 28, 2022, the European rules on price indication, amended by the Omnibus directive, require any announcement of a price reduction to show the prior price. Article 6a of the Price Indication Directive defines that prior price as the lowest price applied by the trader during a period of at least 30 days before the reduction. The Court of Justice of the EU confirmed in September 2024 (Aldi Süd case) that the percentage shown must be calculated from that lowest price, not from the price just before the sale.
In practice for Black Friday:
Outside the EU, fake reference prices are also targeted, for example in the UK and in the US, where the FTC's Guides Against Deceptive Pricing cover former price comparisons. Keep a record of your price history for each product.
| Metric | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Gross margin after discounts, ads and shipping | The real result of the operation |
| Revenue and orders by channel | Where to invest next year |
| New customers and their repeat rate at 90 days | Whether Black Friday built a customer base or only sold discounts |
| Average order value | Effect of bundles and tiered offers |
| Return rate | Impulse purchases can be costly |
| Email list growth and unsubscribes | Health of your owned audience |
| Organic traffic to the Black Friday page | Value of the permanent URL over the years |
After the event, update the Black Friday page with a "see you next year" message, keep the URL, and send new customers a welcome sequence that does not depend on discounts.
More shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Mode for help choosing a gift or finding a deal. Adobe measured that traffic from generative AI services to US retail sites rose 670% on Cyber Monday 2025. Our page on AI shopping explains how these recommendations are built, and our retail AI citation study shows which sites they cite.
Assistants recommend stores and products they find described clearly in pages they can read: buying guides, comparison tables, category pages with useful text. Those pages must exist before November. Sorank's blog article generator writes and publishes buying guides and seasonal articles in autopilot, with internal links to your categories, and AI mention tracking shows whether assistants cite your store on the questions your customers ask. On Shopify, both connect in a few minutes.
The rule to keep: Black Friday is won in September and October, with a permanent page, a warm list, profitable offers and honest prices. The five days themselves only reward the preparation.
Start in September: choose offers, update the permanent Black Friday page, plan stock and budgets. October is for growing email and SMS lists, publishing buying guides and testing ads, so that pages are indexed and audiences are ready in November. Many stores now open early access in the first half of November.
No. Keep one permanent URL such as /black-friday and update its content each year. The page keeps its backlinks, its history and its rankings, so it starts each season with an advantage. Outside the season, leave it live with a short message and a signup form rather than deleting it.
It can be, if the offers stay profitable after discounts, ads and shipping, and if new customers are kept afterwards. Small stores often do better with bundles, gifts with purchase or early access for subscribers than with deep discounts. Measure margin and 90-day repeat purchases, not only revenue.
