How to add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap, use IndexNow and read the key reports, including the new AI Performance report for Copilot.

In short
Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free console for site owners. It shows how Bing crawls and indexes your pages, which queries bring clicks, which sites link to you and, since February 2026, how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your content. Setup takes five minutes if you import your site from Google Search Console, then you submit a sitemap and turn on IndexNow so new pages reach Bing within hours.

Bing Webmaster Tools deserves a place next to Google Search Console because Bing's index feeds more than the Bing results page: it powers Microsoft Copilot and is used by several other search products. Microsoft keeps the console, its help pages and its Webmaster Guidelines in one place.
Bing's share of web searches is far below Google's, but three facts make it worth an hour of your time:
Sign in at bing.com/webmasters with a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account, choose the import option and authorize access to Google Search Console. Bing imports your verified properties and their sitemaps. No code to add, and verification is immediate.
Add the site URL, then pick one method:
Keep the file or the tag in place after verification: Bing checks it again over time and removes access if it disappears.
In the Sitemaps section, submit the URL of your XML sitemap (for example /sitemap.xml or a sitemap index). Bing reads it regularly and reports the number of URLs found and any errors. You can also declare it in robots.txt with a Sitemap line, which every engine reads.
A sitemap tells Bing what exists; IndexNow tells it what just changed. The protocol, documented on indexnow.org, lets your site ping participating engines each time a URL is added, updated or deleted. Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and Yep take part; Google does not. Many platforms support it natively or through a plugin (WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Cloudflare among others), so in most cases you only switch it on. A ping speeds up discovery but does not force indexing: Bing still decides whether the page deserves it.
| Report | What it shows | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Search Performance | Clicks, impressions, average CTR and position by query, page, country and device | Find queries with many impressions and few clicks, then rewrite titles and descriptions |
| AI Performance (preview) | Citations in Copilot, Bing AI summaries and some partner integrations, cited pages, grounding queries | See which pages AI answers reuse and on which topics you are absent |
| URL Inspection | Index status of a URL, detected markup, live test of what Bingbot downloads | Diagnose a page that does not appear, then request indexing |
| Site Explorer | Folder tree of crawled URLs with status codes, clicks and backlinks | Spot sections with errors or redirects at scale |
| Backlinks | Referring domains, linked pages, anchors, plus comparison with other sites | Audit your profile and find sites that link to competitors |
| Keyword Research | Bing search volumes and related queries by country and language | Complete your keyword research with free volume data |
| Site Scan and Recommendations | On-demand crawl of up to thousands of pages with SEO issues ranked by severity | Fix missing titles, duplicate meta descriptions, broken links, oversized pages |
The AI Performance report, launched as a public preview in February 2026, counts citations rather than visits: Microsoft states that a citation does not represent traffic or clicks. Read it as a visibility signal, alongside the click data of Search Performance.
| Feature | Bing Webmaster Tools | Google Search Console |
|---|---|---|
| Search engine covered | Bing, and through it Copilot | Google Search, Discover, News |
| AI citation data | Yes, AI Performance report (preview) | AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic merged into the Web search type, no separate citation count |
| Instant indexing protocol | IndexNow, plus manual URL submission | Request indexing one URL at a time in URL Inspection |
| Backlink data | Detailed, with competitor comparison | Top linking sites and pages only |
| Keyword volumes | Built-in Keyword Research tool | None (only your own queries) |
| Site crawler | Site Scan built in | None |
| Setup shortcut | Import from Search Console | Domain or URL prefix verification |
Open URL Inspection first. The usual causes are a robots.txt rule or a noindex tag that blocks Bingbot, a canonical tag pointing to another URL, a redirect chain, or a page Bing judged too thin or too similar to another one. Fix the cause, run the live test again, then submit the URL. If many pages are crawled but not indexed, look at the whole section in Site Explorer: it often reveals a template problem rather than an isolated page.
Bing Webmaster Tools costs nothing, takes five minutes with the Search Console import and gives you the only first-party view of your citations in Copilot. To go further and see whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity cite your brand, Sorank tracks your presence in the AI on the questions your customers ask, and writes the articles that fill the gaps on autopilot.
Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools is free for any site owner who verifies a site, with no paid tier. Every report, including Site Scan, Keyword Research, Backlinks and the AI Performance preview, is included. You only need a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account to sign in.
With IndexNow or a URL submission, Bing usually discovers a page within hours, and indexing often follows within a few days if the page meets its quality bar. Without them, discovery depends on your sitemap and on how often Bingbot visits the site, which can take weeks for small sites. A ping never guarantees indexing.
Only indirectly. Being well indexed in Bing helps with every product that uses Bing data, but OpenAI does not publish the full list of search providers behind ChatGPT search, and Bing Webmaster Tools shows no ChatGPT data. To know whether ChatGPT cites your brand, you need to test or track the relevant prompts in ChatGPT itself.
