How to rank in Copilot: why Bing decides, how IndexNow and Bing Webmaster Tools help, what to publish and how to measure your citations in Copilot.

In short
Microsoft Copilot answers web questions by searching the Bing index, then cites the pages it used. To rank in Copilot, you first need to be indexed and well ranked on Bing: verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, push new pages with IndexNow and keep Bingbot allowed. Then write clear, sourced passages that answer your buyers' questions, and follow your citations in the AI Performance report of Bing Webmaster Tools.

Ranking in Copilot means being one of the pages Microsoft's assistant links to when someone asks a question about your market, in the Copilot app, in Windows, in the Edge sidebar or on Bing. Copilot started life as Bing Chat on February 7, 2023, and took the Copilot name on November 15, 2023, according to Wikipedia's history of Microsoft Copilot. Its web answers are built on the Bing index combined with OpenAI's GPT models. This guide completes our series on ranking in ChatGPT, ranking in Claude and the other assistants with what is specific to Copilot.
When a question needs fresh or precise information, Copilot sends one or several searches to Bing, reads the best results and writes an answer with numbered citations. Microsoft calls these searches grounding queries: the phrases the assistant uses to retrieve the content it then cites. Two consequences follow.
The Bing index matters beyond Copilot. In its March 23, 2026 presentation of the AI Performance dashboard, Microsoft wrote that its grounding powers nearly every major AI assistant on the market. Work done for Copilot therefore also feeds other assistants that rely on Bing results.
| Assistant | Main live source for web answers | Where you check your indexing |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing index | Bing Webmaster Tools |
| ChatGPT | Its own search index and partners | Server logs (OAI-SearchBot) |
| Gemini and AI Overviews | Google Search | Google Search Console |
| Claude | Brave Search (reported) and Anthropic's crawlers | Brave Search results, server logs |
Yes, partly. Bing rankings decide which pages Copilot reads, but Copilot then picks the passages that answer the question best. A page in fifth position with a precise, self-contained answer can be cited ahead of the first result if the first result buries its answer under a long introduction. The opposite is also true: ranking first on Bing guarantees nothing if the page does not state the answer clearly.
Our Microsoft AI citation study shows another pattern of Microsoft's ecosystem: across 301,025 answers measured by Sorank between August 2025 and August 2026, Microsoft's own properties are cited mostly as documentation, especially in cybersecurity and consulting. In technical markets, a dated reference page often wins the citation where a marketing page does not.
Note
Copilot for Microsoft 365 also answers from a company's internal files (emails, documents, Teams). That part depends on access rights inside the organization, not on SEO. This guide covers web answers, where your public pages compete.
Create an account on Bing Webmaster Tools and verify your site. You can import it directly from Google Search Console in a few clicks. Submit your XML sitemap, check the indexing report and fix the pages Bing excludes. Our guide to Bing Webmaster Tools walks through each report.
IndexNow lets your site notify Bing as soon as a URL is published, updated or deleted, instead of waiting for the next crawl. According to the IndexNow FAQ, one submission can contain up to 10,000 URLs and is shared with every participating search engine (Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yep and others). Many CMS and SEO plugins send IndexNow pings automatically. For Copilot, this matters on time-sensitive pages: prices, product launches, comparisons.
Copilot's web answers depend on Bingbot, the crawler that feeds the Bing index. Check that your robots.txt, your firewall and your CDN let it through, and test your file with the free robots.txt checker. Our guide to robots.txt for AI crawlers lists the other bots worth allowing.
Watch out
The robots meta directives nocache and noarchive are read by Bing for its AI features. A page that carries them may be shown with less content in Copilot, or not used at all. Remove them from the pages you want to see cited.
Open each section with a direct answer of two or three sentences, phrase your headings like the questions your buyers type, and keep one idea per section. Tables, numbered steps and short definitions survive being lifted out of the page. This answer-ready content is what assistants cite, on Bing as everywhere else.
Dated figures, named sources, plain-text prices and author names make a page safer to cite. Add structured data (Organization, Product, FAQPage, Article) so Bing understands what each page describes, and keep your business information consistent across the web.
For local questions ("best plumber near me"), Copilot leans on Bing's local results. Claim and complete your listing with Bing Places for Business, which can import your Google Business Profile. For brand questions, reviews, directory listings and mentions in comparisons all reinforce the same description of your company.
Tip
Look at the grounding queries Bing reports for your site: they are the exact phrases Copilot searched before citing you. Turn the recurring ones into headings and FAQ entries on the page that should win them.
Bing is the only major search engine that shows site owners how often they are cited in AI answers. The AI Performance report of Bing Webmaster Tools shows total citations, the average number of cited pages, page-level citation activity, the grounding queries behind those citations and trends over time. Microsoft describes the data as a sample rather than a full count, and the report does not show clicks.
| Signal | Where to find it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Citations per page | Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance | Which pages Copilot and Bing's AI answers rely on |
| Grounding queries | Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance | The searches that led to your citations |
| Referral visits | Your analytics (copilot.microsoft.com, bing.com) | The clicks those citations bring |
| Prompt tests | Copilot itself, on 20 to 50 buyer questions | Whether your brand is named and who is cited instead |
Copilot is not yet part of the assistants Sorank tracks. For the others, Sorank's AI mention tracking runs your prompts every week on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini on every plan, and on Perplexity and Grok from the Pro plan, with the sources each answer cites. Combined with the AI Performance report, it gives you a view of the main assistants your buyers use.

Copilot is the most SEO-dependent of the major assistants: its web answers start with a Bing search, so classic indexing and ranking work on Bing decides who gets read. What GEO adds is the shape of the content: clear answers, verifiable facts and confirmation by other sites. The pages that win in Copilot are well indexed on Bing, answer precisely and prove what they say. Sorank's article generator writes and publishes that kind of sourced, structured content on autopilot; compare the plans on the pricing page.
No. Microsoft Copilot grounds its web answers in the Bing index, combined with OpenAI's GPT models. A page that ranks on Google but is missing from Bing's index has little chance of being cited by Copilot, so checking your indexing in Bing Webmaster Tools is the first step.
Yes. The AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows citation counts, cited pages and the grounding queries behind them for Copilot and Bing's AI answers. Microsoft presents the figures as a sample, and the report does not include clicks, so pair it with referral traffic in your analytics.
IndexNow tells Bing that a URL is new or updated, so Bing can crawl and index it sooner. It does not guarantee a citation, but a page cannot be cited before it is indexed. It is most useful on pages that change often, such as prices, product pages and comparisons.
