What Screaming Frog SEO Spider does, free vs paid licence, the settings that matter and step-by-step audits for errors, redirects, duplicates and orphan pages.

In short
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler that visits every URL of a site the way a search engine bot does, then lists status codes, titles, meta descriptions, headings, canonicals, directives, redirects and links in sortable tables. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs; a yearly licence (€245 or £199 per user, checked October 2026) removes the limit and unlocks advanced features. It is the reference tool for technical SEO audits: it finds the problems, and you fix them in your CMS.

The Screaming Frog SEO Spider runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and works from your computer, so its speed depends on your machine's memory. The vendor's user guide documents every setting. This guide covers what matters for a first useful audit.
It starts from a URL, follows every link it finds and records what a bot sees on each page. This process is called crawling. For each URL you get:
The value comes from the view at scale: 10'000 pages sorted by issue in a few minutes, where a manual check would take weeks.
| Criterion | Free version | Paid licence |
|---|---|---|
| Crawl limit | 500 URLs per crawl | Unlimited (depends on memory and storage) |
| Price | Free | €245 or £199 per user per year, discounts from several licences (checked October 2026) |
| Crawl configuration and saving crawls | Restricted | Yes |
| JavaScript rendering, custom extraction | Restricted | Yes |
| Google Search Console, GA4, PageSpeed Insights connections | Restricted | Yes |
| Crawl comparison, scheduling | Restricted | Yes |
The free version is enough for a small site or a quick check of a section. As soon as a site passes 500 URLs, or you need to render JavaScript or monitor over time, the licence pays for itself.
Spider mode crawls from a start URL. List mode crawls only the URLs you paste or upload, useful to check a sitemap, a list of old URLs before a migration or a set of backlink targets.
In the settings, switch from memory to database storage on an SSD. Large crawls become possible and are saved automatically.
If content or links are injected by JavaScript (React, Vue, some Shopify or Webflow themes), set rendering to JavaScript. The tool then uses a headless Chromium browser, like Google's renderer. Compare the raw HTML and the rendered HTML to spot content that only exists after rendering.
Connect Google Search Console, GA4 and PageSpeed Insights. Clicks, impressions and Core Web Vitals then appear next to each URL, and URLs found in those sources but not in the crawl reveal orphan pages.
With XPath, CSS selectors or regex, extract any element: publication date, author, price, stock status, a schema type. Handy to audit templates at scale.
Lower the speed (threads or URLs per second) on fragile hosting, and set the user agent to Googlebot only if the site does not block unknown bots.
| Audit | Where to look | What to fix |
|---|---|---|
| 4xx errors | Response Codes tab, Client Error (4xx) filter, then Inlinks at the bottom | Update or remove the links pointing to dead pages, redirect URLs that had backlinks |
| 5xx errors | Response Codes, Server Error (5xx) | Server or plugin issue to raise with the developer or host |
| Redirect chains and loops | Reports, Redirects, Redirect Chains | Point every link straight to the final URL, one 301 hop at most |
| Duplicate or missing titles | Page Titles tab, Duplicate, Missing, Over 60 characters filters | Write one unique title per page with the main keyword at the start |
| Duplicate or missing meta descriptions | Meta Description tab | Write a specific description of 120 to 160 characters |
| Canonical issues | Canonicals tab, Non-Indexable Canonical, Missing filters | Make each canonical point to an indexable 200 URL |
| Noindex pages that should rank | Directives tab, Noindex filter | Remove the tag from pages you want in Google |
| Depth | Links tab, Crawl Depth column, or Site Structure view | Bring key pages within 3 clicks of the home page |
| Orphan pages | Crawl Analysis, then the Orphan URLs filters in Sitemaps, Analytics and Search Console tabs | Add internal links to useful orphans, remove or redirect the others |
| Heavy images, missing alt text | Images tab, Over 100 KB and Missing Alt Text filters | Compress, convert to WebP, write descriptive alt text |
Google explains how it treats HTTP status codes and canonical URLs: read both before deciding what to redirect or consolidate.
Every tab exports to CSV, Excel or Google Sheets. Use Bulk Export for combined data (all inlinks to 4xx pages, all images without alt text) and the Reports menu for redirect chains or canonical errors. For a client or a developer, export only the filtered list of issues with the page URL and the source of the problem: a list of 40 broken links with their source pages gets fixed, a 10'000 row file does not. With a licence, schedule a weekly crawl and use crawl comparison to see what changed after each release.
A crawler sees your site the way Googlebot, Bingbot and the AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) do. A page they cannot reach, that returns an error or that sits seven clicks deep wastes crawl budget and has little chance of being indexed by Google or retrieved by ChatGPT and Perplexity. A clean crawl (200 status codes, one canonical, shallow depth, real internal links) is the base of any technical SEO audit, before content and links.
For one page at a time, you do not always need a crawler: the free on-page SEO audit and the free Sorank Chrome extension show the fixes of the page you are viewing in a few seconds.
Screaming Frog SEO Spider finds the technical problems of a whole site in minutes; the work that brings traffic starts when you fix them in order of impact. Once the base is clean, Sorank publishes optimized, internally linked articles on autopilot so the site keeps growing on Google and in the AI.
Partly. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs per crawl with a restricted configuration. A paid licence, sold per user per year, removes the URL limit and unlocks features such as saving crawls, JavaScript rendering, custom extraction, API connections and scheduling. The vendor lists the current price on its pricing page.
It depends on the site size, the server speed, the crawl speed you set and whether JavaScript rendering is on. A few thousand pages usually take minutes; hundreds of thousands can take hours, and JavaScript rendering slows the crawl noticeably. Database storage and enough memory help large crawls finish.
They answer different questions. Screaming Frog crawls your site on demand and shows its technical state page by page; Google Search Console shows what Google actually indexed, the queries, clicks and errors seen by Googlebot. Use both: connect Search Console to Screaming Frog to see both views side by side.
