GEO statistics for 2026: ChatGPT and AI Overviews usage, the effect of AI answers on clicks, and which sources AI assistants cite, each with a named, dated source.

On this page
In short
AI search is now mass-market. ChatGPT passed 800 million weekly users in October 2025, Google reported more than 2 billion monthly users of AI Overviews in July 2025, and a Pew study found that users click a classic result half as often when an AI summary appears (8% of visits against 15%). On the citation side, Sorank's panel of 301,025 AI answers shows that assistants name between 3 and 11 sources per answer depending on the model, and that a few platforms such as Wikipedia, Trustpilot and Reddit take a large share. Every figure below has its source and date.

This roundup gathers the GEO statistics that help decide whether and how to invest in generative engine optimization: how many people use AI assistants, how AI answers change clicks, and what these assistants cite. We kept only figures we could verify at their source in October 2026, and we say when a number comes from a vendor or from our own data. For the discipline itself, see GEO vs SEO.
| Statistic | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT weekly active users | 800 million | Sam Altman at OpenAI DevDay, reported by TechCrunch, October 6, 2025 |
| Share of the world's adults who had adopted ChatGPT | About 10% | NBER working paper "How People Use ChatGPT", September 2025 (data to July 2025) |
| Share of ChatGPT conversations about practical guidance, seeking information or writing | Nearly 80% | Same NBER paper |
| Monthly users of Google AI Overviews | More than 2 billion, in 200+ countries and territories and 40 languages | Alphabet Q2 2025 earnings, July 23, 2025 |
| Monthly active users of AI Mode | More than 100 million in the US and India | Alphabet Q2 2025 earnings |
| Monthly active users of the Gemini app | More than 450 million | Alphabet Q2 2025 earnings |
OpenAI's figure was announced on stage and reported by TechCrunch, after 500 million at the end of March 2025 and about 700 million in August 2025. The academic view comes from the NBER paper written with OpenAI researchers. Google's numbers come from Sundar Pichai's Q2 2025 earnings remarks.
Note
User counts measure reach, not search share. Many people use ChatGPT for writing or coding rather than for finding a product. What matters for a business is how often its buyers ask assistants questions in its category, which you can only measure with a panel of real buyer questions.
The best independent measurement so far comes from the Pew Research Center, which analyzed the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025 (published July 22, 2025):
Google, for its part, states in its documentation that clicks from pages with AI Overviews tend to be of higher quality. Both can be true: fewer clicks on informational queries, with visitors who arrive further along in their decision. Our article on AI Mode vs AI Overviews explains the two Google surfaces.
The research paper that named the field, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., accepted at KDD 2024), tested content changes on generative answers and found that methods such as adding statistics, quotations and citations can raise a source's visibility by up to 40%, with effects that vary by domain. It remains the main peer-reviewed evidence that GEO techniques work.
Sorank measures what five assistants cite on a panel of business questions. The figures below come from our AI citation report and model studies, covering August 2025 to August 2026. They are our own data: 301,025 AI answers, 1,820,738 citations and 131,349 distinct domains, with 79% of the questions asked in French and the rest in English.
| Model | Average sources named per answer |
|---|---|
| Gemini | 11.1 |
| Grok | 7.1 |
| ChatGPT | 4.1 |
| Claude | 3.5 |
| Perplexity | 3.3 |

Tip
Read citation data model by model. A platform that is a leading source on one assistant can be absent on another, so the right channels (reviews, forums, encyclopedic pages) depend on which assistants your buyers use.

Watch out
Many GEO statistics circulating online come from vendors' small samples or have no source at all. Before quoting a figure, open the original study and check its date, sample and method.
AI search reaches billions of users, changes where clicks go and rewards brands that the cited sources talk about. OpenAI's most recent figure confirmed at its source is more than 800 million weekly active users, announced by Sam Altman at DevDay on October 6, 2025. An NBER paper estimated that about 10% of the world's adults had adopted ChatGPT by July 2025. Check OpenAI's latest announcements for newer numbers.
In a Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults in March 2025, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Google says clicks from pages with AI Overviews tend to be of higher quality. The effect is strongest on informational queries.
It depends on the model. In Sorank's panel of 301,025 answers, Wikipedia is ChatGPT's most cited platform at 3.43% of answers, Reddit is frequent on Grok but absent on Claude, and Trustpilot and Wikipedia led across all models in August 2026.
