Do Google reviews help SEO? Yes for local rankings: Google says reviews feed prominence. How reviews affect map results, clicks and AI answers, and how to get more.

In short
yes, Google reviews help local SEO. Google states that local ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help a business's local ranking. Reviews also raise clicks from the map results, give AI assistants material when they recommend local businesses, and show search engines that your business is active. Their effect on the organic ranking of your website is indirect. The way to use them: ask every customer, reply to every review, and never buy or filter them.

The question do Google reviews help SEO has an official answer. In Tips to improve your local ranking on Google, Google explains that prominence, one of its three local ranking factors, is based partly on how many reviews a business has, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help. This article details what reviews influence, what they do not, and how to earn more of them within the rules. For the context, see our glossary entry on the Google Business Profile.
Google ranks local results on three factors:
| Factor | What it means | Role of reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches the search | Indirect: review text can mention services and places |
| Distance | How far you are from the searcher | None |
| Prominence | How well-known your business is, online and offline | Direct: Google cites review count and rating |
Google also notes that prominence draws on links to your business and on your position in web results, so local SEO and website SEO support each other. And it is explicit that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
Indirectly. Reviews on your Business Profile are not a ranking factor for your website's organic pages. They help through other paths: more visibility and clicks in the map pack, more branded searches, and review content that you can show on your site. If you display reviews on your own pages, Google's review snippet rules apply: no self-serving review markup for your own business on LocalBusiness or Organization pages. See review schema.
Note
Star ratings in the map pack and on your profile influence which business people click, even at the same position. A business in third place with many recent, detailed reviews often gets more calls than the first result with few.
When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for "the best plumber in Bordeaux" or "a good family dentist near me", assistants draw on review platforms, local listings and articles. Businesses with many detailed reviews give them something to cite. Our Trustpilot AI citation study shows how often review platforms appear in AI answers, and our guide GEO vs SEO explains the mechanism.
Tip
Ask customers a guiding question in your request, such as "what did we do for you and how did it go?". It produces detailed reviews that mention your services naturally, without asking anyone to use keywords.
Our guides on how to get more Google reviews and how to respond to Google reviews go step by step; for unfair reviews, see how to remove negative Google reviews.
Watch out
Buying reviews, offering discounts in exchange, posting reviews from employees or asking only happy customers breaks Google's policies on user contributions and consumer law in many countries. Profiles can lose reviews or be suspended.
Google reviews help local SEO directly through prominence, and the rest of your visibility indirectly through clicks, trust and AI answers. Build a steady flow of genuine, detailed reviews and reply to all of them. For the full local picture, read our ranking of local SEO tools. There is no fixed number. Prominence is relative to your local competitors: look at the review count and rating of the businesses in the top 3 for your main searches, aim to reach a comparable level, and keep a steady flow of new reviews.
A few negative reviews among many positive ones are normal and can even make a profile look authentic. A low average rating reduces clicks and trust. Reply calmly and specifically to negative reviews, fix the cause, and report only those that break Google's policies.
Reviews that mention your services and location can support relevance and convince readers, but you should not ask customers to include keywords. Ask open questions about their experience; natural descriptions do the job.
