Knowing the search engine market share helps decide where to invest: in most countries, optimizing for Google covers the vast majority of searches, while some markets (Russia, China, South Korea) need local engines. This page gathers the latest figures with their source and date, and explains what they mean for SEO and for visibility in AI answers. For how engines work, see how search engines work.

Note
StatCounter measures page views referred by search engines on a large network of websites. It reflects traffic sent to sites, not the number of queries typed, and it does not count AI assistants such as ChatGPT as search engines.
Default placement on Android and in Chrome and Safari, a very large index, and decades of habit. On mobile, where most searches happen in many countries, its share is even higher. For most businesses, this means Google's rules and tools (Search Console, its documentation) remain the reference for SEO.
Bing has a larger share in the United States and on desktop, where it is the default on Windows and in Edge. It also powers other engines and services, so optimizing for Bing reaches more than its own share. Our guides to Bing SEO and Bing Webmaster Tools cover the setup.

Market share tables count classic search engines, but buyers increasingly ask assistants. OpenAI's CEO announced more than 800 million weekly ChatGPT users at DevDay in October 2025, as reported by TechCrunch, and Google reported more than 2 billion monthly users of AI Overviews inside its own results. These answers draw on web pages, so search share and AI visibility are now linked. Our GEO statistics gather the key figures, and GEO vs SEO explains how to work on both.
Tip
Check where your own visitors come from in your analytics before adapting your strategy. A B2B audience on desktop in the US may send a meaningful share from Bing; an Asian or Russian market may need a local engine; most others are almost all Google, plus growing referrals from AI assistants.
Watch out
Market share figures vary by source and method, and they change month to month. Quote them with their source and date, and check the latest data before using them in a decision.
Google keeps about nine searches in ten worldwide, Bing matters on desktop and in the US, and AI assistants add a new layer that market share tables do not count. For Google's numbers in detail, read Google search statistics. Sorank, SEO and GEO software that runs on autopilot, works on both layers: content that ranks on Google and tracking of your brand in AI answers; see the Sorank plans, with a 3-day free trial.
According to StatCounter, Google held 89.94% of the worldwide search engine market in September 2026 across all devices, 95.68% on mobile and 85.19% in the United States.
Bing held 5.29% worldwide and 9.89% in the United States in September 2026 according to StatCounter. Its share is higher on desktop, where it is the default on Windows, and it also powers other services.
ChatGPT is an AI assistant that can search the web and answer with sources, so many people use it like a search engine. It is not counted in classic search engine market share data, which measures traffic sent by engines such as Google and Bing.
