In short

local SEO aims to appear when people search near a location, mainly in the map pack and local organic results, using a Google Business Profile, reviews, local pages and consistent listings. National SEO aims to rank across a whole country for topics not tied to a place, using content depth, site authority and links. A business that serves customers in person needs local SEO first; an online business needs national SEO; many businesses with several locations or both channels need a mix.

How should you get more local customers from Google?

Question 1 of 425%
Is your Google Business Profile complete?

The choice between local vs national SEO decides which pages you create, which signals you work on and which competitors you face. A dentist competes with the dentists of its city; an online accounting software competes with every vendor in the country. This guide compares the two strategies and shows how to combine them. For the basics, see our glossary entry on local SEO and our overview of types of SEO.

How does local SEO work?

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, as explained in Tips to improve your local ranking on Google. You influence relevance with a complete Business Profile and local pages, and prominence with reviews, links and mentions; distance depends on where the searcher is. The core work: a verified profile with the right categories, consistent name, address and phone everywhere, reviews, and one strong page per location. See do Google reviews help SEO.

How does national SEO work?

National SEO is classic organic SEO at country scale: research the topics your buyers search, publish the best page for each intent, build topical authority with linked clusters, earn links and keep the site technically sound. Google's SEO Starter Guide covers the foundations, and our SEO strategy guide the plan.

Example

A kitchen design company with two showrooms needs both. Local SEO brings people searching "kitchen showroom Lyon" to its profiles and location pages. National SEO brings people searching "how much does a custom kitchen cost" or "L-shaped vs U-shaped kitchen" from anywhere, some of whom will visit or buy online.

Which one should you choose?

  • You serve customers at a physical place or in a defined area: start with local SEO.
  • You sell online across the country: national SEO.
  • Several locations: local SEO for each location, plus national content that supports them all (see multi-location SEO).
  • Local business with expertise: local first, then national articles that show expertise and attract links.
  • Several countries: national SEO per market, with international SEO rules.

Tip

Look at your target query on Google from the place where your customers are. If a map pack appears, the query has local intent and needs local SEO; if only organic results and AI Overviews appear, it is a national battle.

How do local and national SEO work together?

They reinforce each other. National content earns links and authority that strengthen the whole domain, including location pages; local pages and reviews add prominence and trust signals. Google even notes that a business's position in web results counts toward local prominence. A clean structure helps: one folder for locations, one for guides, linked both ways. Our guide to local landing pages details the location side.

Watch out

Do not create location pages for cities where you have no presence or service, with the same text and a different city name. Google's spam policies call these doorway pages.

How to measure each strategy

For local SEO: map pack rankings on a grid (see local rank tracking), Business Profile calls and direction requests, reviews. For national SEO: organic clicks and impressions in Search Console, rankings by topic, conversions. For both: mentions in AI answers on local and national questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is local SEO easier than national SEO?

Usually, because you compete only with nearby businesses and a strong Business Profile with reviews can rank quickly in small markets. In large cities and competitive trades, local SEO can be as demanding as national SEO.

Can a business without a physical address do local SEO?

Service-area businesses that visit customers, such as plumbers or cleaners, can have a Business Profile with a hidden address and a defined service area. Purely online businesses without customer contact in a location generally cannot, and should focus on national SEO.

Do I need separate websites for local and national SEO?

No. One website with location pages and national content is usually stronger, because authority built by national content benefits the location pages. Separate sites split links and effort.
