GEO reporting: the metrics of a monthly AI visibility report (mention rate, share of voice, cited sources, AI referral traffic), a template and how to present it.

On this page
In short
a GEO report shows, each month, how visible a brand is in answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features. It tracks a fixed panel of buyer questions and reports the mention rate, share of voice against competitors, position in answers, the sources cited, the accuracy of what assistants say, and the referral traffic AI sends. It ends with actions: pages to publish, sources to get listed on, facts to correct. It complements, and does not replace, the SEO report.

GEO reporting answers a question leadership now asks: "do ChatGPT and Gemini recommend us?". Classic SEO reports show rankings and clicks; they miss recommendations made inside AI answers, often without a click. This guide lists the metrics, gives a report template and explains how to read the numbers. For the method of collection, see how to track brand mentions in AI.
| Section | Metric | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Mention rate on the prompt panel, by assistant | The headline figure: how often you are named |
| Competition | Share of voice and brands named instead of you | Shows who wins the shortlist |
| Prominence | Position in answers (first, listed, in passing) | Being named first matters more |
| Sources | Top pages and sites cited in your category | Tells you where to be present |
| Accuracy | Wrong or outdated facts about your brand | Errors to fix at the source |
| Traffic | Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and others | The measurable click side |
| Google AI | AI Overview presence on key queries | Visibility inside Google results |
| Actions | What was done and what comes next | Turns data into decisions |
AI answers vary from one run to the next, so single results mean little. Read rates over the whole panel and compare months, ideally with several runs per prompt. A move of a few points can be noise; a steady trend over two or three months is a signal. Compare with competitors on the same panel rather than with absolute targets.
Note
Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console with web traffic, as stated in AI features and your website. You cannot isolate them there, so presence in AI Overviews must be checked on the results themselves.

Tip
Put GEO and SEO side by side in one report: Search Console clicks and rankings on one page, mention rate and share of voice on the next. Leadership sees the whole search picture, and you can show how one content piece moved both.
In Google Analytics, create a channel or segment for referrals from AI assistants (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai, copilot.microsoft.com). Our guide to measuring AI citations in Google Analytics gives the setup, and Google Analytics vs Search Console explains what each tool counts. Google's help on setting up Analytics covers the basics.
Sorank's AI mention tracking runs the prompt panel in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini (plus Grok from Pro), and the GEO and SEO dashboard shows both visibilities together. The Pro plan includes a monthly PDF performance report, and agencies can send white-label SEO reports that include AI visibility. For other options, see our rankings of GEO tools and SEO reporting tools.
Watch out
Changing the prompt panel every month breaks comparisons. Keep the core list stable for at least a quarter, and add new questions in a separate section until they have history.
A good GEO report tracks the same buyer questions every month, reports rates and share of voice, names the sources to win and ends with actions. Read the trend, not single answers. For the strategy behind it, see GEO vs SEO, or start with the Sorank plans, with a 3-day free trial. Research such as GEO: Generative Engine Optimization explains why content changes move these numbers.
Monthly suits most businesses, with weekly checks of the main prompts during a campaign or launch. AI answers vary daily, so a monthly view over many prompts gives a more reliable trend than frequent snapshots.
There is no universal benchmark: it depends on your category, the prompts chosen and the number of competitors. Compare your rate with your competitors on the same panel and follow its trend over several months.
They are best shown together, on separate pages of the same report. SEO covers rankings and clicks in search results, GEO covers mentions in AI answers; the same content and authority work usually moves both.
