Do G2, Capterra, Trustpilot or Google reviews get you recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini? Our citation data, platform by platform, and the rules to respect.

On this page
In short
Review sites shape AI recommendations because they answer the question buyers bring to assistants: who can I trust? In our panel of 301,025 answers, Trustpilot is the most cited platform across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Grok (2.7% of answers), TripAdvisor dominates restaurant and travel questions, and B2B directories such as G2 are cited far less often than their reputation suggests. Collect genuine reviews on the one or two platforms your buyers' assistants actually cite, keep those profiles complete, answer every review, and never buy or filter reviews: the FTC, Google and Trustpilot all forbid it.

The link between review sites and AI recommendations is now direct. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best CRM for a small agency, or Gemini for a good Italian restaurant near the station, the assistant looks for pages that compare options and show what customers think. Review platforms do exactly that, in a structured format that is easy to quote. The software review market is betting on it: when G2 announced the acquisition of Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp from Gartner on January 29, 2026, it presented their combined 6 million verified reviews as a data foundation "for the age of AI". This guide uses our citation studies to separate what review sites really weigh from what is marketing, then shows how to work on them without breaking any rule.
Three properties make review platforms attractive to a model that has to recommend a supplier in a few lines.
This is also why review sites appear in every model's citations, whereas most other sources are strong on one or two assistants only. Our study of the platforms AI assistants cite found that only 6 platforms are cited by all five models measured.
The figures below come from our panel of buyer questions, sent every month to five assistants between August 2025 and August 2026 (301,025 answers). A citation rate of 2% means the source was cited in 2 answers out of 100.
| Platform | Share of answers citing it | Where it weighs most |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 2.7% (first of all platforms) | Fashion (11.51%), security (4.76%), wellness (4.59%) |
| PagesJaunes | 1.47% | Local services in France |
| TripAdvisor | 1.08% (sixth) | Food and beverage (14.27%), travel (13.2%), hospitality (6.12%) |
| Booking.com | 0.31% | Accommodation |
| G2 | 0.27% | B2B software |
| Clutch | 0.26% | Agencies and service providers |
| Yelp | 0.08% | Travel, food and beauty (3 to 4 times its average) |
The average hides large gaps between models. The Trustpilot study and the TripAdvisor study give the rate for each assistant:
| Model | Trustpilot | TripAdvisor |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 4.33% | 0.73% |
| ChatGPT | 2.7% | 1.09% |
| Grok | 1.8% | 0.83% |
| Claude | 1.57% | 0.19% |
| Perplexity | 1.21% | 1.48% |
Two trends stand out. Trustpilot moved from 0.24% of answers in August 2025 to a peak of 4.21% in June 2026: the models started to treat aggregated review pages as answer material during the period. And in Claude, which cites few sources per answer, Trustpilot is still the most cited platform, as our guide on ranking in Claude explains.
Note
Our panel leans French: 79% of the questions are asked in French. That explains why PagesJaunes ranks high and Yelp low. In an English-speaking market, run the same check on your own questions before deciding where to invest.
Yes, but less than their marketing suggests, and mostly indirectly. In our directories study, g2.com is cited in 0.27% of answers, behind a French agency directory (sortlist.fr, 2.06%) and on par with Clutch. Capterra does not appear in the published ranking. Our panel covers many service and consumer questions, so B2B software is under-represented, and a SaaS company should read these figures as a floor.
The more important effect is indirect. To answer "best project management software for a small team", ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot run several web searches and read the pages that rank for them. G2 and Capterra category pages often rank on those searches, so they feed the answer even when the final text cites a review article or the vendor's own site. Our guide on how AI assistants choose their sources details this retrieval step. For a software company, a complete G2 or Capterra profile with recent reviews is therefore one piece of corroboration among others, alongside comparison articles, documentation and a clear pricing page.
The only reliable way to know is to test your own category. Sorank's AI mention tracking runs your buyer questions every week and lists the sources each answer cites, so you can see whether G2, Capterra or Trustpilot pages appear for your market.

For local businesses, Google reviews matter first. Google states in its help center that local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help a business's local ranking. Gemini and Google's AI Overviews rely on the same Business Profile and Maps data, so reviews there reach AI answers without always appearing as a cited link: a citation count understates them. Our guides explain how to get more Google reviews legitimately and how to respond to Google reviews.
TripAdvisor is the clearest example of a platform whose average says nothing. It is cited in 1.08% of all answers, but in 14.27% of food and beverage answers and 13.2% of travel answers. For a restaurant or a hotel, the review profile is often the page the models read, more than the business's own website.
Example
A bistro with 40 recent TripAdvisor reviews, current hours, a menu and photos gives Perplexity and ChatGPT everything they need to recommend it. A competitor with a better website but a profile last updated two years ago, with old opening hours, is easier for the assistant to leave out.
List 20 to 30 questions your customers ask before choosing a supplier, run them in the assistants they use, and note which review platforms appear. A GEO leaderboard shows which competitors and sources are cited in your place. Focus on the two platforms that lead, rather than opening ten thin profiles.
Fill in the description, category, services, area served, hours and links, with the same wording as your website. The models compare these texts; a profile that contradicts your site weakens the consensus.
Send a neutral review request to every customer after each purchase or visit, not only to the happy ones and not in seasonal bursts. Recency shows in what the assistants quote, and a steady flow looks natural to the platforms' detection systems.
Replies are part of the readable text. A factual answer to a negative review (what happened, what changed) gives the model a balanced picture instead of an unanswered complaint.
Quote real testimonials, link to your public profiles and show your rating with its source. If you add structured data, follow Google's limits on self-serving reviews explained in our guide to review schema.
Beyond a few dozen reviews a month or several locations, a dedicated tool saves time on requests, alerts and replies. Our comparison of the best review management software covers the main options.
Tip
Ask customers to mention what they bought and in which city ("kitchen renovation in Lyon", "CRM migration for a 10-person team"). Specific reviews match specific questions, and assistants can quote them as evidence.
Fake or filtered reviews are not a shortcut to AI visibility. They break the law in many countries and the rules of every major platform, and the sanctions themselves become visible to the models.
| Practice | FTC rule (United States) | Trustpilot | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writing or buying fake reviews | Banned | Removed | Banned and removed |
| Rewarding a review (discount, gift) | Banned when conditioned on a positive or negative sentiment | Banned, whatever the sentiment | Banned in invitations |
| Inviting only happy customers | Not addressed as such | Banned (selective solicitation) | Banned (selective invitations) |
| Staff reviews | Must disclose the connection | Removed (conflict of interest) | Not allowed for your own business |
| Discouraging or suppressing negative reviews | Banned (threats, intimidation) | Banned | Not allowed (reviewers own their reviews) |
The FTC's final rule on fake reviews, announced in August 2024, allows civil penalties against knowing violators. Google's policy on fake engagement forbids incentives, selective solicitation and review quotas imposed on staff. Trustpilot's guidelines for businesses require fair, neutral invitations without incentives. In France, the DGCCRF checks review practices and the consumer code requires sites that publish reviews to say whether and how they are verified.
Watch out
A sanction is public. Trustpilot can display a Consumer Warning on a profile that misuses the platform, and that text is exactly what an assistant reads when it summarizes your reputation.
Review platforms rank on Google for "best", "reviews" and "near me" searches, and the same pages are retrieved by the assistants when they search the web. Working on them helps both channels at once, and our guide to online reputation management covers the rest of your branded results. The rule is simple: genuine, recent and complete reviews on the platforms your sector's assistants cite are worth more than a high score anywhere else. Measure which platforms appear on your questions, act on those, and re-measure every quarter. To track your mentions and the sources cited across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, compare the plans on the Sorank pricing page.
No, but it helps software companies. ChatGPT reads pages that rank on web searches such as best CRM for small business, and G2 or Capterra category pages often rank on them. In our panel, g2.com is cited in 0.27% of answers, so a profile works as corroboration alongside comparison articles, documentation and a clear pricing page, not as a guarantee.
Not on Google, which bans any incentive for a review, and not in Trustpilot invitations. In the United States, the FTC rule bans rewards conditioned on a positive or negative review. A neutral request sent to every customer is the safe method, and it produces the steady, recent reviews assistants quote.
It depends on your sector and on the assistant your buyers use. In our panel, Trustpilot is the most cited platform overall and by far on Gemini, TripAdvisor dominates food, travel and hospitality, and Google reviews weigh through Business Profile data for local businesses. Test your own questions to find the two platforms that lead in your market.
