Reddit backlinks are nofollow, yet threads drive traffic and get cited by Grok, Gemini and Perplexity. What they are worth and how to earn them without spam.

On this page
In short
Links posted on Reddit carry the nofollow attribute, so they pass little or no ranking authority to your site. Their value lies elsewhere: qualified referral traffic, threads that rank on Google for your keywords, secondary links from people who discover you there, and citations by AI assistants (Grok cites Reddit in 4.11% of its answers in our study). Treat Reddit as a community to contribute to, never as a link farm, because both Reddit's rules and Google's spam policies punish link dropping.

Reddit backlinks are links to your website that appear in Reddit posts, comments, profiles or subreddit pages. Many guides sell them as an easy SEO win; the reality is more nuanced. Google's own documentation on qualifying outbound links asks sites to mark comments and forum posts with the ugc value, and Reddit's outbound links are marked nofollow. This guide explains what such a link is worth, where the value really comes from, and how to earn mentions on Reddit for SEO and GEO without getting banned.
Links that users add to posts and comments are rendered with a nofollow attribute, which tells Google not to count the link as an editorial vote. You can check any link yourself: right-click it, choose Inspect, and read the rel attribute in the HTML.
Nofollow no longer means "ignored". In its September 2019 announcement Evolving nofollow, Google explained that nofollow, ugc and sponsored are treated as hints for ranking, and that nofollow became a hint for crawling and indexing on March 1, 2020. In practice, Google may still crawl the linked page and use the link to understand it, but you should not expect it to move your rankings the way a link from a trusted article does.
| Where the link sits | Typical attribute | What it can bring |
|---|---|---|
| Link in a post or comment | nofollow | Referral traffic, discovery of the page, AI citations of the thread |
| Link in a user profile or subreddit sidebar | Varies, check with Inspect | Little traffic, almost no ranking value |
| Thread that ranks on Google for your keyword | Not a link to you | Visibility on the results page you target |
| Article written by someone who found you on Reddit | Often followed | A real editorial backlink with authority |
Note
Claims that a Reddit link "turns dofollow" after a certain number of upvotes circulate on many blogs, without any source from Reddit or Google. Check the HTML before you believe it, and do not build a plan on it.

Directly, very little: a nofollow link passes almost no PageRank. Indirectly, Reddit can do more for a site than most directory or comment links, through four effects.
A useful answer in a thread where someone asks for a tool, a recipe or a method sends visitors who already have the problem you solve. Old threads keep sending traffic for years because they rank on Google and get shared again.
Google gives discussions a large place in its results. In February 2024 it announced an expanded partnership with Reddit giving it access to Reddit's Data API, described as "real-time, structured, unique content". When a Reddit thread ranks on page one for your keyword, being mentioned favorably in that thread is a form of visibility, even without a followed link.
Journalists, bloggers and newsletter authors read Reddit to find sources and examples. A post that gets traction can lead to articles that link to you with a normal, followed link. Those are the links that matter: our checklist of quality backlinks explains how to judge them.
Repeated, positive mentions of your brand in relevant communities feed searches on your brand name and the way Google and AI assistants associate your brand with a topic. Mentions without links still count: our guide to unlinked brand mentions shows how to turn some of them into links on other sites.
This is where Reddit links are underrated. AI assistants answer many questions with the opinions of real users, and Reddit is one of the largest stores of them. OpenAI announced a partnership with Reddit on May 16, 2024 that gives it access to the same Data API, to bring Reddit content into ChatGPT.
The effect differs a lot by model. Our Reddit AI citation study, based on 301,025 AI answers collected between August 2025 and August 2026, measured how often each model cites Reddit:
| AI assistant | Share of answers citing Reddit |
|---|---|
| Grok | 4.11% |
| Gemini | 2.5% |
| Perplexity | 1.51% |
| ChatGPT | 0.33% |
| Claude | 0% |
Over the last three months of the study, Reddit appeared in 1.48% of measured answers, fourth among the platforms tracked. The sectors where it weighs most are manufacturing (5.55%), telecommunications (4.22%) and entertainment (3.1%). So the value of a Reddit presence depends on which assistants your buyers use and on your industry.
When an assistant cites a thread, it cites the discussion, not your site. What matters then is what the thread says about you: whether your brand is named, how it is described, and whether the linked page backs the claim. These UGC citations shape the answer even when the link itself is nofollow.

To find the threads worth joining, look at the searches assistants run before answering: a query fan-out analysis lists them, and many of them are the same questions people ask on Reddit.
The Reddit Rules ask users to "participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest" and not to spam or manipulate content. On top of these sitewide rules, each subreddit sets its own: many ban self-promotion entirely, limit links to a weekly thread, or require a minimum account age and karma. Moderators remove posts and ban accounts, and Reddit can ban a domain from the whole site.
Google takes the same line. Its spam policies list "forum comments with optimized links in the post or signature" as an example of link spam. Mass link dropping on Reddit can therefore hurt you on both sides: removed posts, a banned domain, and links Google ignores at best.
Watch out
Services selling "Reddit backlinks" usually post from bought or aged accounts. That is the content manipulation Reddit's rules forbid, the links are nofollow anyway, and a banned domain can no longer be shared by anyone, including your real fans. Read our guide on buying backlinks before paying for any link.
Posting your own page on a powerful platform to rank in its place also borders on parasite SEO when the content exists only to exploit the domain's authority. Contributing genuine answers is a different practice, and the only one that lasts.
The method is slow and works because it is slow: communities reward people who help before they promote.
Search Google with your main keywords followed by "reddit", and note the threads that rank. Do the same in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity: ask the questions your buyers ask and check which threads they cite.
Check the sidebar and pinned posts for self-promotion limits, link rules and account requirements. If links are not allowed, answer without one.
Post under a personal account and say who you work for when you mention your own product. Reddit users spot disguised promotion quickly, and an honest disclosure is better received than you might expect.
Write the full answer in the comment. Add a link only when the page gives something the comment cannot hold: a data set, a free tool, a detailed guide. A comment that stands on its own gets upvoted; a bare link gets removed.
Tip
Share original data, a template or a free tool rather than a sales page. Those are the resources other writers pick up and link to from their own sites, which is where the followed backlinks come from.
The page you link to should confirm what you said in the thread, in a clear, quotable form. Assistants that follow the thread to your page then find a precise answer they can cite.
Reddit brings traffic and AI visibility; authority comes from editorial links on other websites. Combine both: our guide on how to get backlinks covers nine methods, and Sorank's backlinks acquisition obtains natural backlinks automatically from the sites of its 5,000+ users.
Since rankings will rarely move because of a Reddit link, measure the effects that do exist:
| What to measure | Where | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions from reddit.com | Google Analytics 4, referral report | Whether threads send visitors who engage |
| Conversions from those sessions | Google Analytics 4, with UTM parameters on your own links | Whether the traffic is qualified |
| New referring domains | A backlink tool or Search Console links report | Whether Reddit visibility leads to followed links |
| Brand mentions and citations in AI answers | An AI visibility tracker | Whether threads shape what assistants say about you |
Visits sent by assistants that cite a thread and then your page can be isolated as well: our guide to measuring AI citations in Google Analytics explains the setup.
A Reddit backlink is worth the traffic, the trust and the AI citations it brings, not the authority it passes. Spend your time on a few threads that rank on Google or that assistants already cite, answer them better than anyone else, and earn your followed links on other websites. To see which threads and sources ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok cite when they talk about your market, start with Sorank's AI mention tracking.
They are worth it for traffic and visibility, not for authority. A single helpful answer in a thread that ranks on Google can send qualified visitors for years and be cited by AI assistants. Ranking authority still has to come from followed links on other websites.
No. Paid Reddit backlinks are usually posted from bought or aged accounts, which breaks Reddit's rules on authentic participation, and the links are nofollow anyway. The risk is a removed post, a banned account or a domain banned from the whole site.
Yes, but less than other assistants. OpenAI announced access to Reddit's Data API in May 2024, and in Sorank's study of 301,025 AI answers ChatGPT cited Reddit in 0.33% of its answers, against 4.11% for Grok and 2.5% for Gemini.
