In short

eBay SEO is the work of making your listings rank higher in eBay's own search (Best Match, powered by the Cassini engine) and, secondarily, in Google. eBay ranks listings on relevance to the query, listing quality and completeness, price and shipping terms, popularity and seller performance. The levers you control: an 80-character title built from buyer keywords, complete item specifics and product identifiers, the right category, sharp photos, competitive terms and a clean seller record. Promoted Listings buy extra placements but do not replace a well-built listing.

Quick quiz

Is SEO right for you, and how should you start?

Question 1 of 425%
Do people search Google for what you sell?

eBay SEO follows the same logic as Google SEO, with one difference: the search engine belongs to the marketplace, and it optimizes for sales. eBay says in its Best Match help page that there is no single trick to rank: many factors are weighed, and their weight varies with the search. This guide groups those factors into concrete actions, from keyword research to Promoted Listings, then covers how eBay listings reach Google and AI assistants.

What is eBay SEO and how does Cassini rank listings?

eBay search results are sorted by default with Best Match, the ranking produced by eBay's internal search engine, which eBay calls Cassini in its seller guide to SEO. Cassini reads the whole listing (title, item specifics, description), checks that keywords describe the item, and weighs the buyer experience: photos, terms and the seller's track record. Unlike Amazon, which groups sellers under one product page, eBay shows each seller's listing separately, so two sellers of the same item compete listing against listing.

eBay lists the factors Best Match considers. The table below translates each one into what a seller can change.

Best Match factor (eBay)What it coversWhat you control

How do you find the keywords buyers type on eBay?

The rule from eBay's guide: think like a buyer and use only words that describe the item. Irrelevant keywords lower ranking, and eBay treats adding unrelated brands or terms as keyword spamming. Four sources give you the real vocabulary of buyers:

  1. eBay's search bar suggestions: type the product name and note the completions (models, sizes, colors, compatible devices).
  2. Sold listings: filter a search by sold items and read the titles of listings that sold well. They show the words that convert, not only the words that get searched.
  3. eBay's Product research tool in Seller Hub, which eBay recommends for spotting popular searches and price ranges.
  4. Google keyword tools for the wider demand behind a product, useful for the description and for your own store. A tool for automated keyword research helps here.

Group the terms into a main keyword (the product), qualifiers (brand, model, size, color, condition) and synonyms. The title takes the main keyword and the strongest qualifiers; item specifics and the description carry the rest.

How do you write an eBay title that ranks?

The title is the strongest relevance signal. eBay allows 80 characters and asks for a clear, concise title with correct spelling. Put the words buyers search first, in a natural order:

Brand + model + product type + key attributes (size, color, material, condition or compatibility)

Weak titleWhy it failsBetter title
L@@K!! AMAZING Vintage Watch WOW RareSymbols, capitals, no brand or model, no searched word except "watch"Seiko 5 Automatic Men's Watch 37mm Blue Dial Stainless Steel Vintage 1970s
Phone case for iPhone Samsung PixelSeveral incompatible models, read as keyword spammingiPhone 15 Pro Leather Case MagSafe Compatible Brown Card Slot
Running shoes size 10Too generic, wastes most of the 80 charactersAsics Gel-Nimbus 26 Men's Running Shoes Size 10 Black White

Avoid emojis, words in capitals, punctuation used as decoration and words like "wow" or "look" that nobody searches. Use the subtitle (a paid option) for selling points such as "free returns" rather than spending title characters on them. To draft variants quickly, an SEO title generator gives a starting point that you then trim to eBay's limit.

Tip

Write the title for buyers who already know what they want: the exact model, the exact size. Those buyers convert, and conversion feeds back into Best Match through the popularity of the listing.

Why do item specifics, category and identifiers matter so much?

Item specifics (brand, model, size, color, material, style) feed the filters on the left of eBay's results. eBay's own example: a buyer who filters on a red phone case only sees cases with "red" in their item specifics. A listing with empty fields drops out of every filtered search, whatever its title. Fill in every field that applies, including the recommended ones, with the values eBay suggests rather than free text when a list exists.

Three other fields complete the picture:

  • Category: eBay suggests one automatically and can be wrong (its own example is a pocket watch suggested under wristwatches). Check it, and add a second category when the item truly fits both.
  • Product identifiers: brand, manufacturer part number (MPN) and GTIN codes (UPC, EAN, ISBN). Selecting the matching product in the eBay catalog fills them automatically.
  • Condition: precise and honest, with defects described. It reduces returns, which protects seller performance.

How do photos and descriptions affect eBay ranking?

Photos count as listing quality and drive clicks from the results page. eBay's picture policy requires at least one photo of at least 500 pixels on the longest side and forbids added borders, added text or marketing graphics, watermarks, and stock photos for used or damaged items. eBay lets you add up to 24 photos to a listing for free and recommends showing the item from every angle, defects included.

  • Make the first photo the clearest: it is the one shown in search results.
  • Use a plain background and natural light; show scale (item in hand, next to a ruler).
  • Upload through eBay's photo tool rather than embedding images in the description, so they display well on mobile.

The description is read by Cassini and by Google. Keep the key facts first, in short paragraphs, with the main keyword and its synonyms used naturally. eBay's SEO guide also recommends alt text on images placed in the description, for accessibility and visibility. The principles are the same as in our guide to image SEO.

How do price, shipping, returns and seller performance count?

Best Match includes the buyer's total cost and the listing terms. eBay advises competitive prices, reasonable shipping, clear return policies and fast handling. Seller performance "greatly affects" search position, according to eBay's SEO guide: ship on time, upload tracking, keep stock accurate to avoid cancellations, and answer messages quickly.

Do Promoted Listings help eBay SEO?

Promoted Listings are eBay's ads. They give a listing extra placements in search results and on item pages; they do not repair a weak listing, and eBay does not say that promoting a listing improves its organic Best Match position. Two models exist:

  • General strategy (cost per sale): you choose an ad rate from 2% to 100% of the total sale amount and pay only if the item sells within 30 days of a click on the ad, according to eBay's general campaign help page. The rate can be fixed or follow eBay's daily suggestion. General campaigns are also eligible by default for placements off eBay, such as search engines, with an opt-out on request.
  • Cost-per-click strategy (named priority or advanced depending on the eBay site): you pay per click, with a daily budget, keyword targeting and bids. It suits best-sellers and seasonal pushes.

Promoted Offsite is a third format: it shows fixed-price listings as ads on external channels, Google being the example eBay gives, with clicks sent to the eBay listing. It is billed per click, and eBay's Promoted Offsite help page sets the monthly cap at the daily budget multiplied by 30.4. It works like Google Shopping ads run on your behalf.

Watch out

A general-strategy fee applies when the promoted item sells within 30 days of a click, even if the buyer later came back through organic search. Calculate your margin with the ad rate included before promoting low-margin items.

How do eBay listings show up on Google and in AI assistants?

eBay listing pages are public and indexed by Google. The listing title becomes the page title, and, as eBay's guide notes, external search engines read all the text on the page, not only the item name. A precise title, complete item specifics and a written description therefore help on Google as well as on eBay. Fixed-price listings that stay live for months give Google time to crawl and rank them, which short auctions rarely do.

AI assistants now recommend products too. ChatGPT Shopping and Google's AI features draw on product data, reviews and pages that describe products clearly. For marketplace sellers, the lesson is the same as for AI shopping in general: structured attributes, real photos and verifiable reviews make a product easier to cite. Our study of AI citations of Amazon shows how much marketplace pages weigh in AI answers.

The limit: on eBay, the brand belongs to eBay. Sellers who want to be named by Google and by ChatGPT need a site of their own with useful content, and a way to track brand mentions in AI answers.

Note

Many eBay sellers also run their own store (on Shopify, for example). The product pages there follow the rules of our guide to the ecommerce product page and can rank for the same products without marketplace fees.

The eBay SEO checklist

  1. Research keywords from eBay suggestions and sold listings.
  2. Write an 80-character title: brand, model, product type, key attributes.
  3. Fill every item specific and the product identifiers; check the category.
  4. Add sharp photos (500 pixels minimum, no borders, text or watermarks), first photo on a plain background.
  5. Write a short description with the key facts first.
  6. Set competitive price, shipping and handling, and accept returns.
  7. Protect seller performance: on-time shipping, tracking, accurate stock.
  8. Promote selectively, with the ad rate included in your margin.

The listings that rank on eBay are the ones that answer the buyer's search most precisely and sell without friction. To build traffic you own outside the marketplace, Sorank connects to your store (for example through its Shopify integration), finds the keywords, and writes and publishes optimized articles with its article generator in autopilot. Frequently asked questions

Does eBay use the same SEO rules as Google?

The principles are close: relevance, quality and user experience. The signals differ, because eBay's Cassini engine also weighs price, shipping, return policy, sales history and seller performance, which Google does not see. A listing that is complete and sells well tends to do well in both.

How long does it take for eBay SEO changes to show?

Changes to the title, item specifics or price are taken into account quickly after you revise the listing, but ranking also depends on the listing's sales and engagement history, which builds over weeks. Revising a live listing keeps its history, so prefer revisions to ending a listing and creating a new one.

Do eBay Store pages help with SEO?

An eBay Store gives your listings a branded home with categories and a description, and store pages can be indexed by Google. Each listing still ranks on its own merits in Best Match, so the store complements well-built listings rather than replacing them.
