ChatGPT shopping explained: how ChatGPT recommends products, Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol, and how brands get their products listed.

In short
ChatGPT now answers shopping questions with product recommendations, images, prices and links, and since September 2025 it can let users buy some products without leaving the chat through Instant Checkout, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe. To be recommended, a brand needs clear, structured product information that ChatGPT can read (product pages and, where available, a product feed), strong reviews and mentions on the sites ChatGPT relies on, and content that answers buyers' comparison questions.

ChatGPT shopping changes how buyers search: instead of typing "running shoes" and comparing ten tabs, they ask "which running shoes for flat feet under 150 dollars?" and get a shortlist. For an e-commerce brand, being on that shortlist is the new equivalent of the first page. This guide explains what is known about how ChatGPT chooses products, what Instant Checkout is, and what to do now. Facts are dated, because these features change quickly.
When a question has buying intent, ChatGPT can search the web and show products with images, prices, reviews and links to merchants, alongside a written comparison. Users can refine ("lighter", "cheaper", "available in Europe") and ChatGPT updates the list. Product information comes from what ChatGPT can read on the web and from structured product data that merchants provide.
The shortlist reflects how well a product matches the request and how much the sources ChatGPT reads support it. Reviews, comparison articles, forums and the product pages themselves all count. Our Amazon AI citation study and Shopify AI citation study show how often these platforms are cited by assistants.
On September 29, 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, which lets users in the United States buy some products directly in ChatGPT. According to Stripe's announcement, it started with US Etsy sellers, with Shopify merchants announced to follow, and it runs on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard co-developed by Stripe and OpenAI. The merchant remains the seller of record and keeps fulfillment, customer service and returns.
Stripe also reported that, when several merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT considers factors such as availability, price, quality, whether the merchant is the primary seller and whether Instant Checkout is enabled. OpenAI documents the merchant side (product feeds, agentic checkout, delegated payment) in its commerce documentation. For the wider shift, see our guide to agentic commerce.
Note
Availability changes by country, platform and account type. Before investing in an integration, check the current eligibility in OpenAI's merchant documentation and with your e-commerce platform.
Name, brand, price, currency, availability, variants, dimensions, materials, compatibility, shipping and returns, all in text on the page, with Product structured data consistent with what is visible. A product ChatGPT cannot describe precisely is hard to recommend for a precise request. Our guide to e-commerce product pages lists the essentials.
Structured feeds let shopping surfaces read your catalog reliably. If your platform supports OpenAI's product feed or ACP integration in your market, set it up; in any case, a clean feed for Google Merchant Center helps both Google Shopping and AI shopping features (see product feed management software).
Ratings and detailed reviews on your site and on third-party platforms are among the signals buyers and assistants read first. Mark them up with review schema where allowed.
Write guides and comparisons for the questions buyers ask: "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "how to choose X", "X size guide". These pages give ChatGPT sourced passages to quote and link products to use cases.
Comparison articles, review sites, marketplaces, forums and specialized media in your category. A product absent from all of them rarely makes a shortlist, however good its own page.

Tip
Ask ChatGPT ten questions your customers ask before buying, and note which products and sources appear. The sources that come back often are the sites where you need to be listed or reviewed.
Track a fixed list of buying questions over time and record whether your products or brand appear, at which position in the list, and which competitors are named. Watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com in your analytics, and orders attributed to ChatGPT where your platform reports them. Sorank's ChatGPT rank tracker and AI mention tracking run these questions automatically.
Watch out
Do not create fake reviews or paid placements disguised as editorial comparisons to get into AI answers. Beyond the legal risk in many countries, assistants cross-check sources and platforms remove fake reviews.
ChatGPT recommends the products it can describe precisely and that trusted sources talk about. Complete product data, a clean feed, real reviews and content that answers buying questions are the levers that work today, whatever the next feature. Sorank, SEO and GEO software that runs on autopilot, writes and publishes the buying guides and comparisons that feed these answers, connects to Shopify and other platforms, and tracks your brand in ChatGPT. OpenAI's merchant documentation describes how product data is submitted for discovery and, separately, the requirements for ads, which evolve over time. Whatever the programs, merchants improve their chances with complete product data, a product feed and real reviews.
At launch in September 2025, Instant Checkout was available to users in the United States buying from US Etsy sellers, with Shopify merchants announced next. Availability may have expanded since; check OpenAI's merchant documentation and your platform for your country.
No. ChatGPT can recommend products from any site it can read, as long as product information is clear and the product is discussed by trusted sources. Platform integrations such as Shopify's mainly help with checkout and product feeds.
