The most expensive keywords on Google in 2026: sourced CPC data, the costliest industries, why clicks reach $200 and how to rank without paying.

On this page
In short
The most expensive keywords on Google Ads are legal injury terms such as "motorcycle injury lawyer" (about $210 per click in US data compiled in January 2026), followed by addiction treatment, insurance, loans and business services. Prices are high because one client is worth thousands of dollars and many advertisers compete for a few ad slots. Across all industries, the average search click costs $5.42, so a $100+ keyword is a rare extreme.

Lists of the most expensive keywords circulate every year, and most of them recycle the same mesothelioma figures from a decade ago. This guide puts the numbers in order: the latest keyword-level data with its date and method, the average cost per click by industry, the historical record holders measured by Kantar's four-year study of US Google ads, and what you can do when your own market sits at the top of the price list. If you are new to the metric, start with our definition of cost per click (CPC).
The most recent keyword-level list comes from Fraud Blocker's ranking of Google Ads keywords, compiled in January 2026 with CPC estimates from Ahrefs. It covers the United States only, keeps keywords with at least 750 searches a month and removes local variants such as a city name plus "injury attorney". All 25 keywords in the top 25 are personal injury terms.

Source: Fraud Blocker, data compiled January 2026 (US, Ahrefs CPC estimates). The same source lists addiction and rehab, online education, insurance and loan keywords in its category tables, but those come from older 2022 data, so treat them as indicative.
Ahrefs published its own list of the 100 most expensive US keywords (updated September 2026). Legal services make up 17.5% of its 10,000 most expensive keywords, far ahead of ecommerce (3.9%), education (2.6%) and financial services (1.5%). Its top 10 mixes lawyer terms ("mesothelioma attorney chicago", "los angeles slip and fall lawyer") with surprising entries such as "axon taser" or "lingo meaning". A single high bid on a niche term can push a keyword into the list, which is why keyword-level rankings move a lot from one year to the next.
Watch out
In the Ahrefs list, the first 41 keywords all show exactly $100, the next 35 exactly $95 and the last 24 exactly $90. Rounded or capped figures like these are estimates from a tool's database, not prices paid in auctions. Check your own keywords in Google's Keyword Planner before you budget.
Keyword records show the extremes. Industry averages show what a typical advertiser pays. The LocaliQ search advertising benchmarks (updated June 2026, based on thousands of customer campaigns on Google Ads and Microsoft Ads) put the all-industry average CPC at $5.42.
| Industry | Average CPC | Versus all-industry average |
|---|---|---|
| Attorneys and legal services | $9.87 | 1.8x |
| Home and home improvement | $8.33 | 1.5x |
| Dentists and dental services | $8.00 | 1.5x |
| Personal services | $7.17 | 1.3x |
| Health and fitness | $6.17 | 1.1x |
| Business services | $5.87 | 1.1x |
| Education and instruction | $4.81 | 0.9x |
| Finance and insurance | $3.39 | 0.6x |
| Arts and entertainment | $1.63 | 0.3x |

Two lessons come out of this table. First, the gap between a record keyword ($210) and the legal average ($9.87) is huge: most law firms buy many cheaper, long and specific queries alongside a few expensive head terms. Second, finance and insurance sit below the average on LocaliQ's mostly local, small-business sample, while insurance keywords appear near the top of national keyword lists. Both are true: a national insurer bidding on "car insurance quotes" faces a very different auction from a local broker. Our page for insurance agencies covers how local brokers compete without matching national budgets.

A keyword gets expensive when four conditions meet.
Example
Take a hypothetical firm that converts 5% of ad clicks into consultations and signs 1 consultation in 4. It needs 80 clicks per signed client. At $150 per click, that is $12,000 of ad spend per case. If the average fee per case is $30,000, the firm still earns money, which is why it keeps bidding.
The same logic explains why cheap keywords stay cheap: a click on "lingo meaning" rarely leads to a sale, so few advertisers fight for it outside a few niche bids.
You never pay the bid of the top advertiser. According to Google's help page on actual cost-per-click, you pay only what is minimally required to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the Ad Rank of the competitor just below you, and never more than your maximum CPC bid (except with some automated bidding tools).
Ad Rank combines your bid, the expected quality of your ad and landing page, the context of the search and the thresholds Google sets. A better Quality Score lets you win the same position for less money. On an expensive keyword, a few points of quality can save dozens of dollars per click.
| Term | What it means | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Max CPC | The most you accept to pay for one click | You |
| Actual CPC | What you are charged, usually below your max CPC | The auction |
| Average CPC | Total cost divided by total clicks over a period | Calculated by Google Ads |
| Top of page bid (low and high range) | Estimated bids for a top-of-page ad, from past auctions | Keyword Planner estimate |
The free Keyword Planner inside Google Ads gives two numbers per keyword. According to Google's page About Keyword Planner forecasts, the low range is roughly the 20th percentile of bids advertisers have paid and the high range roughly the 80th percentile, for your location and network settings, based on the last 30 days. Treat the high range as the realistic price for a competitive keyword.
Semrush, Ahrefs and other suites show a single CPC estimate next to search volume and difficulty. These figures are useful to compare keywords with each other, less to plan a budget. Sorank's keyword research also shows CPC with volume, keyword difficulty and intent, and its SEO chat lets you ask for easy-to-rank keywords with a high CPC.

Once a campaign runs, the actual CPC in your Google Ads reports beats any estimate. Compare it with the Keyword Planner range after 2 to 4 weeks of data.
For years, mesothelioma held every record. Kantar measured US Google text ads from August 2014 to August 2018 and found that 67 of the 100 most expensive keywords were mesothelioma terms, including the entire top 10.
| Keyword (Kantar, 2014 - 2018) | Average CPC |
|---|---|
| mesothelioma cancer lawyer | $226.50 |
| virginia mesothelioma lawyers | $224.00 |
| hawaii mesothelioma lawyers | $207.90 |
| mesothelioma lawyer new jersey | $178.70 |
| oklahoma mesothelioma attorneys | $164.90 |
Kantar also recorded "mesothelioma attorneys tx" at $319.34 per click in 2014, and "mesothelioma" alone at $99.44 in October 2009. Twenty other lawsuit terms (car accident attorneys, structured settlements) and business services such as "business telephone provider" ($130.79) completed its top 100. The pattern has barely changed since: the costliest clicks still belong to injury law, because each client is worth more than in almost any other market. Our page for personal injury lawyers shows how these firms build organic visibility.
A $100 click calls for a review of the whole channel mix, bids included.
Tip
Export your 50 most expensive keywords from Google Ads and check where you rank organically for each. The ones where you sit in positions 5 to 15 are the cheapest to push into the top 3, and each gain cuts your ad bill directly.
Yes, and they are often the first to move. A growing share of people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity "which personal injury lawyer should I call in Houston?" instead of typing a keyword. These assistants cite a few firms, directories and review sites, and no bid can buy a place in their answer. Our study of AI citations in legal services shows which sources the AIs rely on in this sector.
For markets where a click costs $100 or more, being named in AI answers has the same value as an organic ranking: qualified visits you do not pay per click. You can see whether your firm is cited, and who is cited instead, with AI mention tracking. Pages that answer clear questions, with prices, process and proof, are the ones both Google and the AIs pick up.
The most expensive keywords in 2026 are injury lawyer terms at $100 to $210 per click, while the average search click costs $5.42. The higher your CPC, the more organic and AI visibility is worth. Sorank finds the keywords your clients search, then the article generator writes and publishes optimized pages on autopilot so you rank on them without paying for each click, with a 3-day free trial to test it.
In US data compiled in January 2026 by Fraud Blocker with Ahrefs estimates, "motorcycle injury lawyer" ranks first at about $210 per click. Close behind are "motorcycle injury attorney", "spinal cord injury attorney" and "birth injury attorney". Local variants with a city name can cost even more but were excluded from that list.
One signed injury client can bring a firm thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in fees, so firms can afford to pay a lot per click. Many firms compete for the same few ad slots in each city, which pushes bids up. LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put the average legal CPC at $9.87, the highest of all industries it measures.
A high CPC shows that advertisers make money from that traffic, so ranking organically for it is valuable. Those keywords are often competitive in organic search too, so start with longer, more specific variants. Each organic click on a $100 keyword is worth the $100 you would otherwise pay in ads.
