In short
Grok answers with live searches on two sources at once, the open web and posts on X, and lists the pages and posts it used. To rank in Grok, your pages must be readable and well ranked on the web, your brand must be present on the community platforms Grok cites most (Reddit, Facebook, YouTube, Amazon, LinkedIn, review sites), and your X account should state clear, linkable facts. Grok cites many sources per answer and makes citation errors, so check regularly how it describes you.

Ranking in Grok means being one of the sources Grok links to when someone asks about your market, in the Grok app, on grok.com or directly inside X. Grok is built by xAI, which took over X Corp. in March 2025 and became a subsidiary of SpaceX in February 2026. That link to X is what sets Grok apart from the assistants covered in our guides to ranking in ChatGPT and ranking in Claude.
Grok combines what its model learned in training with live searches. xAI's developer documentation describes two separate tools: a web search tool that lets Grok search the web in real time and browse pages to extract information, and an X search tool that looks through posts on X. In the consumer app, both run behind the same answer.
Because it searches at every question, Grok reacts fast to fresh content. A page updated this week or a post that is being discussed today can appear in an answer within days, which is rarely true of what a model learned during training.
Our Grok citation study measured 20,002 Grok answers to buyer questions between August 2025 and August 2026. Grok names 7.1 sources per answer on average, second only to Gemini (11.1) and twice as many as Claude (3.5). More sources per answer means more slots to win.
| Platform | Share of Grok answers citing it | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 4.11% | Threads where buyers compare suppliers count | |
| 3.81% | Pages, groups and reviews are read | |
| Amazon | 3.03% | Product listings and their reviews are quoted |
| YouTube | 2.76% | Reviews and tutorials with clear titles |
| 1.88% | Company pages and expert posts | |
| Trustpilot | 1.8% | Recent customer reviews |
| 1.21% | Brand accounts on consumer topics | |
| Wikipedia | 1.08% | Encyclopedic description of the brand or category |
Grok is the assistant where community and marketplace content weighs most: eight platforms exceed 1% of its answers, against one for Claude. One result goes against a common assumption: on these buyer questions, X itself does not appear among the twelve platforms Grok cites most. X posts matter for news and live topics; for "which supplier should I choose" questions, Grok relies on the open web and on communities. Our Reddit citation study compares how each assistant uses Reddit.
Note
Grok has the smallest sample of the five assistants in our panel, and most questions were asked in French. Read these figures as a direction for your priorities, not as exact values for your sector.
Yes, X is one of Grok's two live sources, and it is the one no other assistant has in real time. It weighs most when the question is about recent events, opinions, launches or a public person. For a brand, that makes X a direct channel into Grok's answers on topical questions:
Our guide to SEO and GEO on X (Twitter) covers profile and post optimization in detail.
Unlike OpenAI or Anthropic, xAI does not publish an official page listing its crawlers and their user agents (checked October 2026). Third-party bot directories report names such as GrokBot or Grok-DeepSearch, but without an official source or published IP ranges, they cannot be verified. Whatever the agent name, what counts is that your pages answer normally when Grok browses them live, and that they rank on the web so its searches find them.
Watch out
Aggressive bot protection that blocks every unidentified agent can stop Grok from reading your pages when it browses them live. Keep your key pages readable in plain HTML and review your firewall rules; our guide to robots.txt for AI crawlers explains which agents to allow.
Grok's web search finds pages that already rank well. Indexable pages, explicit titles, internal links and backlinks remain the base, as for Perplexity. A page buried on page five of the results is unlikely to be read.
Open each section with a direct answer, use headings phrased like your buyers' questions, and add dated figures and named sources. Grok favors recent material, so a visible "updated" date on comparison, pricing and statistics pages helps.
Use the table above as a priority list: answer questions in the Reddit communities of your sector (with transparency, as yourself), keep your Facebook page and reviews active, publish YouTube videos on your key topics, complete your Amazon or marketplace listings, and collect reviews on Trustpilot or the platforms of your sector. Our page on Reddit for SEO and GEO explains how to take part without spamming.
Turn every important page into a short post that states its key fact and links to it. Grok can then find the fact on X and the detail on your site, two consistent sources instead of one.
Grok compares many sources at once. When your site, your X profile, your reviews and your directory listings describe the same offer with the same words, Grok has a clear picture to repeat. Contradictions (old prices, discontinued products) end up in answers.
Less than you would hope, which is a reason to watch them. In a test published in March 2025, the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism Review asked eight AI tools to identify the source of news excerpts: Grok 3 answered 94% of the queries incorrectly, the worst score of the panel, against 37% for Perplexity. Models have improved since, but the risk remains that Grok attributes a fact to the wrong page or repeats an outdated detail about your brand.
Tip
When Grok repeats a wrong fact about you, find the page it cites. Correcting that source (an old article, an outdated listing, a forum thread you can answer) works better than publishing one more page that contradicts it.
Run 20 to 50 of your buyers' questions in Grok every week, note whether your brand is mentioned, which of your pages are cited and which competitors appear instead, and watch referral visits from grok.com in your analytics. Because answers vary from one run to the next, the trend over several weeks matters more than a single test.
Sorank's AI mention tracking automates this follow-up: Grok and Perplexity are tracked from the Pro plan, alongside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, with the sources behind each answer. The Grok visibility tracker page details the Grok view.

Grok rewards the same base as Google, readable pages that answer well, and adds two layers: the conversation on X and the community platforms where buyers compare offers. With about seven sources per answer, it gives more brands a chance than Claude or Perplexity, provided they exist outside their own site. The brands that win in Grok are present on the web, on X and in the communities of their market, with the same facts everywhere. To track it on your own questions, compare the plans on the pricing page.
No. Grok searches the open web and X posts, and lists both kinds of sources in its answers. In Sorank's panel of buyer questions, the platforms it cites most are Reddit, Facebook, Amazon, YouTube and LinkedIn; X weighs more on news and live topics.
No paid subscription is required to be cited: Grok reads public posts and public web pages. What matters is a complete, consistent profile and posts that state clear facts with a link to the page that details them. Verification can help credibility but is not a documented ranking factor.
The base is the same: readable pages, direct answers, sourced facts and a good position on the web. Grok adds real-time X posts as a source, cites more sources per answer than ChatGPT and leans more on community platforms such as Reddit and Facebook. Track it separately, because a brand visible in ChatGPT is not automatically visible in Grok.
