Twitter/X is the public conversation network that was called Twitter until its rebrand in 2023. In AI answers it plays a narrow role: assistants cite it for breaking news, official announcements, service outages and statements by public figures, and rarely for advice about products or local businesses. Grok, developed by xAI within the same group as X, can search its posts directly.
Citations of
Twitter/X by AI model
ChatGPT almost never cites Twitter/X (under 0.01 per 100 answers over 148'295 answers), while Gemini cites it 0.03 times per 100 answers.
How to read it: one line per AI model; each point is the number of citations of Twitter/X per 100 answers of that model in the month. The table gives the totals over the whole period.

What kind of information do AI models get from X?
X is a stream of short, dated, public statements. That makes it useful to an AI model in a few precise situations: confirming that a company announced something, quoting what a minister or a chief executive said, checking whether an app is down, or capturing the first reactions to an event before articles are written.
It is much less useful for the questions most people ask AI assistants about businesses. A post rarely explains a price, compares two offers or describes a service in detail, and its value fades within days. When the information matters, a news article or the company's website usually repeats it in a more citable form.
The two domains, twitter.com and x.com, lead to the same content, and AI answers still use both names. That is why the platform is tracked here as Twitter/X.
When does an AI answer cite
Twitter/X?
- “Is Instagram down right now?” or “Why can't I log in to my bank's app today?”
- “What did the CEO say about the layoffs?”
- “Has the airline announced compensation for the cancelled flights?”
- “What is the official account for local transport updates?”
- “How did fans react to the new game trailer?”
These prompts share a need for immediacy. In media, technology and finance, some announcements appear on X before anywhere else, and AI models with search can use them as the primary source. For practical questions such as “best accountant in Lyon” or “which vacuum cleaner should I buy”, X is almost never the most informative page available.
Industries where AI cites
Twitter/X the most
| Industry | per 100 answers | Against its average |
|---|---|---|
| 0.05 | × 3.3 |

Grok and X, and why the other models cite it less
Grok is the special case. It is developed by xAI, part of the same group as X, and it can search X posts in real time alongside the web. Posts can shape a Grok answer even when the sources listed underneath are news sites, so the visible citation count understates X's influence on Grok.
The other assistants reach X through the open web, which sees less of it than before. Since 2023, X has restricted what logged-out visitors can view and has turned access to its API into a paid service, which reduces how much third parties can read.
- Gemini can find the posts that Google Search indexes.
- Perplexity and ChatGPT occasionally list a post among their sources when a story is very recent.
- Claude cites only through its web search tool and rarely links to X.
Reading a low citation rate
A low Twitter/X rate does not mean the platform is irrelevant to AI. It reflects the questions tracked here, which mostly concern companies, products and services, and the way X content often reaches answers through intermediaries: a journalist embeds a post in an article, and the article is what gets cited.
Short peaks, when they occur, tend to follow events. A major outage, a product launch or a controversy can briefly bring X into answers about one industry, and the rate falls back once written coverage takes over.
Using X to support your visibility in AI answers
- Use your X account for dated, official statements (launches, incidents, price changes) and publish the same statement on your website's news page, which assistants other than Grok read more easily.
- Write a bio with your exact company name, activity and website, and pin a post that explains what you do in one or two sentences.
- Answer customer problems publicly and show how they were solved: Grok can summarise the tone of conversations about a brand, and unanswered complaints shape that summary.
- Reply to journalists and industry analysts with precise facts, since a quote that ends up in an article becomes a source every model can cite.
- Keep the same handle and brand name on X, your website and other networks, so assistants attribute posts to the right company.
- Add brand prompts to your GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) monitoring, such as “what are people saying about [brand]?”, and compare Grok's answer with those of the other models.
Frequently asked questions
Does Grok use posts from X in its answers?
Yes. Grok, developed by xAI, can search X posts in real time in addition to the web, which gives it the most direct view of conversations on the platform among the major assistants. Its displayed sources do not always show this, because a Grok answer can be informed by posts while listing articles or websites as references.
Why do ChatGPT and Perplexity rarely cite X?
Mainly because they reach X through web search, and much of X is not visible to logged-out visitors or crawlers. Posts are also short and quickly outdated, so when a story matters, a news article covering it is usually the better source. These assistants cite X mostly for very recent events or official announcements.
Should a brand keep posting on X to be visible in AI answers?
It depends on the brand. For media, technology, finance and companies that handle customer service in public, X is where announcements and reactions start, and Grok reads it directly. For local or B2B businesses, a well-documented website, review profiles and press coverage usually do more for AI visibility than frequent posting.
How often do AI assistants cite Twitter/X?
On average, Twitter/X gets 0.01 citations per 100 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, across 498'158 answers analyzed from August 2025 to October 2026. That puts Twitter/X 32nd of the 37 platforms tracked by Sorank.
Which AI cites Twitter/X the most?
Gemini, with 0.03 citations per 100 answers. ChatGPT cites Twitter/X the least: under 0.01 per 100 answers.
