Citations of WhatsApp by AI model

Summarize this article with AI

WhatsApp is Meta's messaging app, used by billions of people for private chats, groups and calls, and by businesses as a customer contact channel. Its conversations are end-to-end encrypted, so AI models never read them. WhatsApp appears in AI answers in two ways: as a way to contact a business, and as the subject of how-to and comparison questions about the app.

What is WhatsApp as a source for AI answers?

WhatsApp is not a source of content in the usual sense. Chats, groups and calls are private and encrypted end to end, and nothing from them reaches a search index or a training corpus through the platform.

What AI models know about WhatsApp comes from public material:

  • the official help center, which explains features such as backups, moving to a new phone, privacy settings or disappearing messages;
  • the WhatsApp Business pages, which describe the free Business app and the Business Platform used by larger companies through technology providers;
  • business websites and listings that display a WhatsApp number or a click-to-chat link to book, order or ask a question;
  • media coverage of privacy debates, outages and new features.

Channels, a one-way broadcast feature, are the closest thing WhatsApp has to published content, but they are designed to be followed inside the app rather than read on the web.

Which questions make AI assistants mention WhatsApp?

Two very different intents produce most mentions.

The first is practical help with the app: "how to transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone", "how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages", "WhatsApp vs Signal vs Telegram for privacy". Here the platform is the subject of the answer, and the official help pages are the natural source.

The second is reaching or buying from a business: "how to book a table at [restaurant]", "does [shop] offer customer service on WhatsApp?", "best tools to send WhatsApp campaigns to customers". In these answers WhatsApp is a channel, mentioned because a company lists it on its site or because marketing software integrates it.

Event organisers, shops, marketing agencies and local service providers frequently offer a WhatsApp contact, especially in countries where the app is the default way to reach a company, such as Brazil, India, Spain or Italy.

How AI models differ when WhatsApp is involved

Since no model can read WhatsApp conversations, the differences concern the public pages around them.

  • Gemini is grounded in Google Search results, where a company's website and local listings often show its contact options, including a WhatsApp number.
  • Perplexity searches the web for each question and quotes help articles and tech media when the question is about a feature of the app.
  • ChatGPT answers many WhatsApp how-to questions from training data, then uses search for recent features or for a specific business's contact details.
  • Grok picks up news and complaints about WhatsApp from X, for instance during an outage.
  • Claude usually explains the feature directly and only quotes a page when it searches the web.

Meta has built its own assistant, Meta AI, into WhatsApp. That assistant is not one of the five models measured on this site.

What the WhatsApp figures really measure

Most WhatsApp citations are mentions, not links: "contact them on WhatsApp", "use WhatsApp Business to automate replies". A rise in the curve can reflect more questions about local businesses or customer service rather than more content coming from WhatsApp itself.

For a brand, the useful question is therefore not whether WhatsApp is cited, but whether an AI that explains how to reach the brand gives the right channel and the right number.

How to make sure AI models present your WhatsApp contact correctly

  1. Display your WhatsApp Business number or click-to-chat link as plain text on your website, on the contact page and in the footer, so models can read it.
  2. Use the same number and the same opening hours on your website, local listings and social profiles; contradictions lead models to drop the channel or give wrong details.
  3. Complete your WhatsApp Business profile (description, address, hours, website), since it is the first thing a customer sees after an AI sends them there.
  4. Write a short public page explaining what customers can do with you on WhatsApp: book, order, track a delivery, get after-sales help.
  5. If you run a WhatsApp Channel, repost its key announcements on your website or blog, where they can be indexed and quoted.
  6. Ask AI assistants "how do I contact [your brand]?" at regular intervals and fix the sources when the answer is outdated; it is a simple, useful GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) check.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT or other AI models read my WhatsApp messages?

No. WhatsApp chats and calls are end-to-end encrypted, and the five assistants measured here (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity) have no access to them. They only know what is public about WhatsApp: help articles, business pages, news. Meta AI, the assistant built into WhatsApp, is a separate product and is not part of these measurements.

Why does an AI assistant tell me to contact a company on WhatsApp?

Because the company lists WhatsApp as a contact channel somewhere the model can read it: its website, a local listing, a directory or a review page. The assistant passes that information on. If the number is outdated or inconsistent across sources, the answer may be wrong, which is why businesses should keep their contact details aligned everywhere.

Does WhatsApp Business help a brand appear in AI answers?

Only indirectly. A WhatsApp Business profile lives inside the app, where AI models do not look. What helps is publishing the WhatsApp contact, and the services offered through it, on public web pages. AI assistants can then mention the channel when users ask how to reach, book or order from the brand.

How often do AI assistants cite WhatsApp?

On average, WhatsApp gets 0.02 citations per 100 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, across 498'158 answers analyzed from August 2025 to October 2026. That puts WhatsApp 29th of the 37 platforms tracked by Sorank.

Which AI cites WhatsApp the most?

Gemini, with 0.04 citations per 100 answers. Perplexity cites WhatsApp the least: under 0.01 per 100 answers.
