Stack Overflow is the question and answer site where developers post programming problems and vote on the best solutions. Its archive is part of what AI models learned about code, yet assistants rarely link to it outside debugging questions: they reuse its knowledge without naming it, and it almost never appears in answers about brands, products or local businesses.
Citations of
Stack Overflow by AI model
How to read it: one line per AI model; each point is the number of citations of Stack Overflow per 100 answers of that model in the month. The table gives the totals over the whole period.
| Model | Answers analyzed | Citations of Stack Overflow | per 100 answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 148'295 | 0 | 0.00 | |
| 148'287 | 20 | 0.01 | |

| 56'291 | 0 | 0.00 | |
| 26'638 | 1 | 0.00 | |
| All models | 498'158 | 21 | 0.00 |
Per 100 answers: citations of Stack Overflow for every 100 answers of the model, from August 2025 to October 2026.

Hollow points and asterisk: fewer than 1'000 answers that month in that language, so the rate varies strongly from one month to the next.
What kind of source is
Stack Overflow for AI models?
Stack Overflow is a public archive built on one format: a precise technical question, several answers, votes and, often, an accepted solution. Each thread pairs a problem with a fix that other developers have checked, which is exactly the material a language model learns well from.
Three features make it useful as a source:
- Error messages quoted word for word, matching what users paste into a chatbot.
- Code snippets with explanations and comments that point out edge cases.
- Community signals (votes, accepted answers, edits) that show which solution actually works.
Contributions are published under a Creative Commons license that requires attribution. In 2024, Stack Overflow announced agreements with Google and OpenAI about the use of its content in their AI products, with credit given to the original threads.
Which prompts still lead to a
Stack Overflow citation?
Citations appear when a question is narrow and technical: "TypeError: cannot read properties of undefined in React", "how to undo the last git commit", "Python list comprehension with two conditions", "why does my SQL join return duplicates". When the assistant searches the web, a Stack Overflow thread is often among the closest matches.
Questions about companies, products or services almost never lead there. "Which CRM for a small agency" or "is this web host reliable" has no answer on Stack Overflow, whose rules close requests for tool or product recommendations.
The questions behind this dataset mostly concern businesses and their markets, so Stack Overflow is rarely cited here. That reflects the type of question far more than the authority of the site.

Why do assistants answer coding questions without citing it?
Much of Stack Overflow's value reached AI models through training. The Stack Exchange network has published dumps of its public content for years, and models have absorbed common fixes so thoroughly that they write them from memory. An answer generated from memory has no link to display.
Retrieval habits shape the rest. Perplexity searches for every question and shows its sources, so a thread can appear when a debugging query matches it closely. Gemini, grounded in Google Search, and ChatGPT with search enabled surface threads mainly for rare or recent errors. Grok can add developer posts from X, while Claude generally writes the fix itself and links to a thread only when it uses web search.
The relationship has changed the site itself. The number of new questions has dropped markedly since conversational assistants became mainstream, as many developers now ask a chatbot first. The archive remains, but recent frameworks and versions are covered by fewer fresh threads.
How should a brand read
Stack Overflow's position?
A low citation rate does not make Stack Overflow irrelevant. For a developer tool, an API or a technical product, its threads still shape how models describe and troubleshoot that product, even when no link is shown.
Two limits apply to the figures. Only stackoverflow.com is counted, while sister sites of the Stack Exchange network such as Super User or Server Fault have their own domains. And for a business without a technical audience, the site simply lies outside the set of sources that answer customer questions.
How to work with
Stack Overflow for AI visibility
- If you sell a developer product, treat Stack Overflow as a GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) channel for troubleshooting queries: follow the tag of your product and make sure frequent questions have correct, current answers.
- Answer as an identified team member, disclose your affiliation and solve the problem inside the thread rather than linking to your site, since the community removes self-promotion.
- Turn recurring threads into official documentation pages that quote the exact error messages, because users paste those strings into chatbots and search engines.
- Update or comment on accepted answers when your API changes: an outdated snippet can keep being reproduced by assistants long after you fixed it.
- Publish a public changelog and a migration guide for each major version, so that models searching the web find the current method next to the old threads.
- Ask assistants the technical questions your users ask and check, with an AI mention tracker such as Sorank, whether your product is named and described correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT use Stack Overflow answers?
Yes. Stack Overflow threads are part of the public material language models learned from, and in 2024 OpenAI and Stack Overflow announced a partnership to bring its content into ChatGPT with attribution. In practice, ChatGPT answers most coding questions from what it learned and shows a Stack Overflow link mainly when it searches the web.
Why is Stack Overflow almost never cited in AI answers about businesses?
Because it holds no information of that kind. Stack Overflow is limited to programming questions, and its rules close requests for product or service recommendations. Questions such as "best accounting software" or "reliable moving company in Paris" are answered with review platforms, specialised media and company websites instead.
Is Stack Overflow still useful now that developers ask AI chatbots?
Yes, mainly as a store of verified solutions. Its archive covers millions of solved problems, and votes and accepted answers remain quality signals for search engines and assistants. Its weak point is freshness: fewer new questions are posted, so recent frameworks and versions are less documented there than older ones.
How often do AI assistants cite Stack Overflow?
On average, Stack Overflow gets 0.01 citations per 100 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, across 498'158 answers analyzed from August 2025 to October 2026. That puts Stack Overflow 36th of the 37 platforms tracked by Sorank.
Which AI cites Stack Overflow the most?
Gemini, with 0.01 citations per 100 answers. Claude did not cite Stack Overflow in any of its 56'291 answers.
Method and sources
498'158 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, from August 2025 to October 2026, to the questions Sorank asks every week to follow its clients' visibility (87% of them in French). A citation is a source domain given in an answer; the rate is the number of citations per 100 answers. Data snapshot of 2 November 2026.
