GitHub is the Microsoft-owned platform where developers host code, documentation, release notes and bug reports. In AI answers it acts as a primary source on software: when a question concerns an open-source tool, an API, a package version or a security flaw, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok or Claude can point to the repository itself instead of an article about it.
Citations of
GitHub by AI model
Gemini cites GitHub 8.2 times more often than Perplexity (0.37 vs 0.05 citations per 100 answers).
How to read it: one line per AI model; each point is the number of citations of GitHub per 100 answers of that model in the month. The table gives the totals over the whole period.
| Model | Answers analyzed | Citations of GitHub | per 100 answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 148'295 | 295 | 0.20 | |
| 148'287 | 553 | 0.37 | |
| 118'647 | 54 | 0.05 | |
| 56'291 | 59 | 0.11 | |
| 26'638 | 16 | 0.06 | |
| All models | 498'158 | 977 | 0.20 |
Per 100 answers: citations of GitHub for every 100 answers of the model, from August 2025 to October 2026.
GitHub over time
On the months measured in both languages (from July to October 2026), AI cites GitHub 11.0 times more in English (0.90) than in French (0.08).
How to read it: GitHub citations per 100 answers, week by week (month by month for the older history), in French and in English.

| October 2026 | 92'505 | 0.11 | 17'282 | 0.94 |
Hollow points and asterisk: fewer than 1'000 answers that month in that language, so the rate varies strongly from one month to the next.
What do AI assistants take from
GitHub?
GitHub is a primary source in the strict sense: its pages are written by the people who build the software. A README explains what a project does, a release page says what changed in each version, and the issue tracker shows which bugs are known and whether they are fixed. AI models treat these pages as evidence when they describe a tool.
Four kinds of GitHub pages tend to surface in answers:
- Repository home pages, whose README works as the official description of an open-source project.
- Releases and changelogs, used for questions such as "what is the latest version" or "when was this feature added".
- Issues and discussions, quoted when someone asks about a bug, a limitation or a workaround.
- Security advisories from the GitHub Advisory Database, which documents known vulnerabilities in open-source packages.
Organisation profiles matter as well. A company that keeps its SDKs, plugins or integrations in a public GitHub organisation gives AI models a verifiable trace that its product exists and is maintained.
Which questions lead an AI to cite
GitHub?
Citations cluster around technical intents. Typical prompts include "open-source alternative to Jira", "how to install the Stripe CLI", "is this npm package still maintained", "best self-hosted password manager" or "how to patch the Log4j vulnerability". In each case the repository is the most direct proof an assistant can offer.
Questions about everyday businesses rarely reach GitHub. Nobody needs a repository to find "a reliable plumber in Lyon" or "the best accounting firm for a startup". As a result, GitHub citations concentrate on questions about software publishers, cybersecurity vendors and IT service companies, and stay marginal in other sectors.
Language plays a part too. Documentation on GitHub is overwhelmingly written in English, so English answers reach it far more naturally than French, German or Spanish ones, which tend to cite translated tutorials or local media instead.

Why do ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and Claude cite
GitHub differently?
Most of the gap comes from how each model retrieves information. Gemini grounds many answers in Google Search, where repositories rank well for project names, so a GitHub link can come along with the answer. ChatGPT combines what it learned in training with live results from ChatGPT search, and attaches a repository link mostly when the question names a specific project.
Perplexity searches the web for every question and lists its sources, yet for comparison queries it frequently relies on review articles and vendor sites rather than raw repositories. Grok adds posts from X, where developers announce releases and discuss bugs. Claude cites sources less often by default and tends to describe a project in its own words unless web search is turned on.
Part of GitHub's influence is invisible in citation counts. Public code and documentation hosted on GitHub feed the training data of many large models, so an assistant may explain how a library works without naming the page it learned from.
How to read
GitHub citations on this page
A citation here means that the answer gave a page on github.com as a source: a repository, an issue, an advisory or the GitHub documentation. Advice such as "host your code on GitHub" without a link is a recommendation of the service, a different signal that this rate does not capture.
Sites built with GitHub Pages live on github.io or on custom domains, so they are best read as websites in their own right. For a brand, the valuable case is one of its own repositories showing up in an answer about its category: a technical reference that an assistant can check, something marketing pages rarely achieve.
How to get cited by AI through
GitHub
- Write your README as an answer page, the core of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) on GitHub: open with one sentence defining the project, then say who it is for, how to install it and how it compares with alternatives.
- Publish your SDKs, API clients, plugins and integrations under an organisation account named exactly like your brand, with your official website and a short description in the profile.
- Tag every release with a version number, a date and readable notes, so that assistants answering "latest version" questions find an explicit, current source.
- Answer issues and enable Discussions: an active tracker signals a maintained project, and solved threads can be cited for troubleshooting questions.
- Fill in the repository description, topics, license and website field, which help GitHub search, search engines and AI crawlers classify the project correctly.
- Check whether your repositories appear in answers about your software category, in English and in your other markets, with an AI mention tracker such as Sorank.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT use GitHub code to answer questions?
Yes, in two ways. Public code and documentation from GitHub are part of the material many models were trained on, so ChatGPT can explain a library without searching. When ChatGPT search is active, it can also open a repository page and cite it as a source, which happens mostly for questions about a specific tool, version or installation step.
Why is GitHub cited more in English than in French answers?
Because most content on GitHub is written in English. READMEs, issues and documentation of popular projects rarely exist in French, so when an assistant answers in French it tends to cite translated tutorials, local media or vendor sites instead. Questions asked in English about software and security reach GitHub pages much more directly.
Can a non-technical company be cited by AI through GitHub?
Rarely, unless it publishes something technical. A company that offers an API, a plugin for WordPress or Shopify, an open dataset or a public integration can host it on GitHub and be cited when users ask about that topic. For a company with no software component, review platforms and specialised media are more relevant sources.
Do GitHub stars help a project get cited by AI assistants?
There is no public evidence that AI models rank sources by star count. Stars act indirectly: popular repositories attract more links, articles and discussions, which makes them more visible in search engines and more present in training data. A clear README, regular releases and an active issue tracker remain the parts a maintainer fully controls.
How often do AI assistants cite GitHub?
On average, GitHub gets 0.20 citations per 100 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, across 498'158 answers analyzed from August 2025 to October 2026. That puts GitHub 18th of the 37 platforms tracked by Sorank.
Which AI cites GitHub the most?
Gemini, with 0.37 citations per 100 answers. Perplexity cites GitHub the least: 0.05 per 100 answers.
Method and sources
498'158 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, from August 2025 to October 2026, to the questions Sorank asks every week to follow its clients' visibility (87% of them in French). A citation is a source domain given in an answer; the rate is the number of citations per 100 answers. Data snapshot of 2 November 2026.
