What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews (formerly SGE) are AI-generated summaries that Google displays at the top of certain search results pages. They synthesize information from multiple sources and, in many cases, replace the need to click any organic result. According to a 2025 Ahrefs study on 300,000 keywords, the CTR of the top organic result drops by up to 58% when an AI Overview is present. A separate Seer Interactive study found a 67.8% reduction in overall query CTR when an AI Overview appears. AI Overviews now trigger on roughly 31% of Google queries.

How the tool above works

  • AI Overview present, brand not cited: analyze which sources Google selects -- they tend to be comprehensive, well-structured pages with clear answers. Rewrite or expand your page to match that pattern.
  • No AI Overview: the query may be too navigational or local for an AI Overview; focus standard SEO efforts here while testing adjacent informational queries.
  • Add structured data (FAQ, Article, Organization) to help Google extract answers from your page more reliably.
  • Build topical authority: Google tends to cite sources it already trusts across a cluster of related queries, not just a single page.
  • Check that your page is not blocked for Google-Extended in robots.txt, as blocking may reduce AI indexing.

Benchmark: the CTR cost of being absent

A position-1 ranking without an AI Overview yields a median CTR of 27.6%. With an AI Overview above it, that same ranking can drop to roughly 11.5% -- a loss of more than half your expected clicks.
